EN MEMORIAM - From Deadline:  The manga and anime creator, Leiji Matsumoto, has died at the age of 85, Monday, February 15, 2023.  Matsumoto directed the legendary Japanese anime series, "Space Battleship Yamato" (1974-75), which is also known as "Star Blazers."  He wrote and drew the manga, "Galaxy Express 999" (1977-81) and "Space Pirate Captain Harlock," to name a few. Matsumoto supervised the creation of several music videos for the French recording artists, the duo known as "Daft Punk," set to music from their 2001 album, "Discovery."

SONY MARVEL U - From ScreenRant:  Series star Tom Hardy says that "Venom 3" is officially in pre-production.

COMICS - From TCJDan DiDio, publisher of Frank Miller Presents and former DC Comics boss, talks to "The Comics Journal."

MARVEL - From BleedingCool:  In the wake of the debut of the Disney Channel series, "Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur," reprint trade collections and back issues of the Marvel Comics' series of the same title are hot. So much for "Go woke, go broke."

CULLEN BUNNWORLD - From BleedingCool:  Master of horror comics, writer Cullen Bunn, is dropping two new horror comic book series in May.  "Lamentation" at Oni Press and "Ghostlore" at BOOM! Studios.

MARVEL STUDIOS - From Variety:  Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talks about the studio's upcoming film slate.

DC STUDIOS - From THR:  Director Todd Phillips shares a first-look at singer-actress image of Lady Gaga as "Harley Quinn" in the upcoming film, "Joker: Folie à deux."

MARVEL/SONY - From Deadline:  Actor John Leguizamo talks about losing the role of "The Vulture" in Sony/Marvel's "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

DC STUDIOS - From Deadline:  Warner Bros. has released a new poster for its upcoming superhero flick, "The Flash."  The film is due in theaters on June 16, 2023.

COMICS TO FILM - From IndieWire:  Director of the upcoming "Cocaine Bear," Elizabeth Banks says she once made a pitch to direct "Thor: Ragnarok," but she never heard back from Marvel Studios.  She also had a pitch for a Catwoman movie.

EN MEMORIAM - From CBR:  Comic book artist, Lee Moder, has died at the age of 53 on or around January 15, 2023.  He was best known for creating Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl with writer Geoff Johns, the star of the series "Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E."  He also drew "Wonder Woman" and "Legion of Super-Heroes" for DC and "X-Force" for Marvel Comics.  He also created the vampire comic book, "Shinku" with Ron Marz for Image Comics

MARVEL - From CBR:  The great cartoonist and comics creator, Ho Che Anderson, talks about the cancellation of "Luke Cage: City of Fire" in this wide-ranging interview.

DC ANIMATION - From Deadline:  "Abbot Elementary's" Quinta Brunson will voice "Hawkgirl" and Tyler James Williams will voice "Hawkman" in the upcoming animated Valentine's special, "Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special." The special will debut Feb. 9th on HBO Max.

DC COMICS - From DCBlog: Writer Morgan Hampton talks about bringing Cyborg into the 21st century in the new "Dawn of DC" May 2023 launch, "Cyborg."

DC STUDIOS - From Deadline:  DC Studios' co-CEO Peter Safran says that the cancelled "Batgirl" film was "not releasable."  He says that he wants to be "back in business" with the film's creative talent.

COMICS TO TV - From DeadlineAmazon Studios is developing a deal to adapt writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips comic books series, "Criminal," into a TV series.  Brubaker will serve as head writer and executive producer.

DC STUDIOS - From THRJames Mangold, director of the upcoming "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" and previous "Logan," is in early talks to direct DC Studios' just announced "Swamp Thing" film.

MANGA TO TV - From CBRNetflix has announced that its live-action series adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's legendary manga, "One Piece," will debut later this year (2023).

DC STUDIOS - From YouTube:  Here is DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn's video announcement about Chapter One: Gods and Monsters of the new DC Studios film and TV slate.

James Gunn and Peter Safran Announce DC Studios Opening Film and TV Slate

DC Studios Announces Slate of 10 New Film and Television Projects

(Los Angeles, CA) – DC Studios Co-Chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran today announced plans for their first 10 film and television projects under the new DC banner they lead across film, television, and animation. Gunn and Safran are designing and implementing a long-term interconnected story for the iconic franchise and characters, and today announced the beginning of “Chapter 1” focused on “Gods and Monsters” with five new films and five television series for HBO Max already in development.

“As we craft the plan for DC Studios, we are thrilled to share with fans the first 10 stories they can expect from the unified DC Universe featuring some of our most well-known characters as well as the next generation of marquee characters” said Safran. “Chapter 1 tells cohesive stories that highlight love, compassion, and the innate goodness of the human spirit, all designed to minimize audience confusion and maximize audience engagement across platforms.”

Gunn is writing Superman: Legacy, the first film of the new slate, which will be released in theaters globally on July 11, 2025. The highly-anticipated sequel The Batman – Part II is slated for release on October 3, 2025, it was also announced by Gunn and Safran today.

Gunn added: “Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world. I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”

The upcoming slate of projects includes:

Film Projects:
Superman: Legacy – written by Gunn, the film will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

The Authority – WildStorm characters will join the DCU as members of The Authority take matters into their own hands to do what they believe is right

The Brave and the Bold – the DCU will introduce its Batman and Robin in this unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow - this science fiction adventure, which will be based on Tom King’s amazing, award-winning recent comics stories, presents a Supergirl viewers are not used to seeing

Swamp Thing – the film will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing

Television Projects for HBO Max:
Creature Commandos – a seven-episode animated show in which Amanda Waller creates a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners; Gunn wrote all the episodes of the first season

Waller – starring Viola Davis, this series features Team Peacemaker and will be written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Supernatural)

Booster Gold – Booster Gold uses basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in present day

Lanterns – this enormous TV event series follows intergalactic cops John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they uncover a dark mystery  

Paradise Lost ­– set in Themyscira, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman, this drama focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women

DC COMICS - From DCBlog:  Writer Mark Waid talks about the "explosvie twist" in the series, "Batman vs. Robin."

DC STUDIOS - From CBRWarner Bros. reportedly begged "Joker" director, Todd Phillips, to take the job leading DC Studios, but like many people in Hollywood, he did not want the job.

From Variety:  "Shazam" actor Zachary Levi, defends DC Studios bosses, James Gunn and Peter Safran, saying, "Give them time to create something special."

From Variety:  After meeting with James Gunn, co-chair of DC Studios, actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson says that his superhero character, Black Adam, star of the recent film, will not appear in the first chapter of the new universe of DC Comics films.

SONY SPIDER-MAN U - From THR:  Writer-director-producer Donald Glover ("Atlanta") is attached to star in and produce a movie for Sony's Spider-Man universe.  It will focus on the villain, "the Hypno-Hustler," which debuted in "Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #24."

DC STUDIOS - From DeadlineJames Gunn, co-Chair and co-CEO of DC Studios, is writing a Superman film, but actor Henry Cavill will not return as Superman/Clark Kent.  Meanwhile, Ben Affleck will remain at DC Studios - as a director and not as Batman/Bruce Wayne.

MARVEL - From BleedingCoolGreg Capullo is moving to Marvel Comics, first drawing covers and then drawing an unnamed project.

MARVEL STUDIOS - From DeadlineThe Library of Congress has unveiled its annual list of 25 movies to make the cut for the National Film Registry.  The 2022 class includes Marvel Studios' "Iron Man."

DC STUDIOS - From THR:  Director Patty Jenkins says that there was nothing she could do to move "Wonder Woman 3" forward, in the wake of the film's cancellation.

MILLARWORLD - From THR:  Mark Millar has announced his next Millarworld/Netflix comic book project, "The Ambassadors," a series with global potential.

EN MEMORIAM - From TheDailyCartoonist:  American freelance cartoonist, Don Orehek, died at the age of 94 on November 6, 2022.  Orehek was a prolific book, magazine, and newspaper gag cartoonist, who best known association was the American humor magazine, "Cracked."  His work also appeared in "Good Housekeeping," "Playboy," and "The Saturday Evening Post," to name a few.

DC STUDIOS - From THR:  "Wonder Woman 3" is supposedly no longer happening, but new DC Studios bosses, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are supposedly prepping a multi-year plan for DC Comics films.

From THRJames Gunn, DC Studios co-chair and co-CEO, responds to "The Hollywood Reporter's" story about the transition period for the studios film, which included news that "Wonder Woman 3" has been cancelled.

DC TV - From Deadline:  The CW's superhero television series, "The Flash," will debut its ninth and final season February 8th, 2023.

DC COMICS - From CBR:  The anthology one-shot, "Shazam! Fury of the Gods Special: Shazamily Matters #1," features stories co-written by Shazam! star Zachary Levi and actors Grace Caroline Currey, Ross Butler, D.J. Cotrona, Adam Brody and Faithe Herman. The issue also features contributions made by Fury of the Gods screenwriter Henry Gayden and other comic creators, such as Colleen Doran, Josh Trujillo and Tim Seeley.

EN MEMORIAM - From TheBeat:  Cartoonist and Underground Comics creator, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, has died at the age of 74, Tuesday, November 29, 2022.  Kominsky-Crumb was one of the first of the underground cartoonists to produce autobiographical comics.  She was part of the "Wimmen's Comix" collective.  Along with the late Diane Noomin, she was a contributor to and editor of the "Twisted Sisters" comics anthology.  Aline was married to legendary Underground Comics creator, R. Crumb, with whom she had a daughter, cartoonist Sophia Crumb.

EUROCOMICS TO FILM - From THR:  Comic book legend, Frank Miller ("Daredevil," "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns"), is the writer for Studio Canal's television miniseries based on the legendary European comic, "Corto Maltese."

From CNN:  Concerns over COVID-19 has led to the cancellation of San Diego Comic-Con International 2020.  This is the first cancellation in the 50-year history of the event.

From Newsarama:  So it is official:  Diamond Comic Distributors has targeted mid to late May 2020 to resume distribution of comic books and other products.

From Newsarama:  Writer-artist Sophie Campbell says that IDW has instructed her to stop producing work on its "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" comic book series "for now," with work stop with issue #105.  TMNT #105 to 107 have been solicited

From Newsarama:  Writer Larry Hama says that IDW has told him to suspend any current writing he is doing on the long-running "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero" comic book, which IDW currently publishes.

COVID-19 COMICS IN MEMORIAM:

From Newsarama:  Legendary Argentine comic book writer and artist, Juan Gimenez, died at the age of 76, Wednesday, April 2, 2020.  He is best known for drawing "The Metabarons," for writer Alejandro Jodorowsky.  His other series include "The Fourth Power" and "Leo Roa."  He designed the "Harry Canyon" segment for the animated feature film, "Heavy Metal" (1981).  He had been diagnosed with COVID-19.

EUROCOMICS - From BleedingCool:  There is one more "Asterix" graphic novel coming from the original creative team, the late writer Rene Goscinny and the recently deceased artist Albert Uderzo.  "Asterix and the Golden Menhir" arrives on October 21st by Albert René Editions in France and Belgium and by Panini in other territories.

COMICS - From Newsarama:  Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird are returning to their creations, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin."  It is an adaptation of an unpublished story from 1987.

NEWSPAPER COMICS - From TulsaWorldRussell Myers reflects on the 50-year history of his newspaper comic strip, "Broom-Hilda," and its Tulsa Oklahoma roots.

MANGA - From BleedingCool:  Yen Press announces a new manga title, "I'm a Behemoth, an S-Ranked Monster, but Mistaken for a Cat, I Live as an Elf Girl's Pet."

IN MEMORIAM - From Deadline:  The cartoonist, caricaturist, and comic book artist, Mort Drucker, has died at the age of 91, Wednesday, March 8, 2020.  Drucker is best known for drawing "Mad Magazine" for over five decades, where he specialized in satirizing films, television series, and their stars, actors, and filmmakers.

DC TV:  From Deadline:  Actor Erik Valdez (formerly of "General Hospital") has been cast as "Kyle Cushing," the husband of classic Superman character, "Lana Lang," in The CW's "Superman & Lois."

COMICS AWARDS - From Newsarama:  The nominees for the 2020 Hugo Awards, the most prestigious awards in science fiction, have been announced.  They have a comics category ("Best Graphic Story or Comic").

COMICS AWARDS - From Newsarama:  The nominees for the 2020 / 16th Annual Doug Wright Awards have been announced.  The Doug Wright Awards recognize English-language Canadian comics, although Canada is a bilingual nation (French and English).  The winners will be announced Sat., May 9, 2020.

FOX MARVEL U - From GamesRadar:  The runtime of "The New Mutants" is reportedly 94 minutes, which if true, would make it the shortest "X-Men" movie.

COMICS TO FILM - From Newsarama:  Netflix has debuted a trailer for "Extraction," a new film by Joe and Anthony Russo, the brothers behind the final two Avengers film.  Starring Chris Hemsworth ("Thor"), "Extraction" is based on the Russos' graphic novel, "Ciudad," which was published by Oni Press.

DC ANIMATION - From Newsarama:  Shazam joins the DC Comics' Lego animation line with "Shazam!: Magic and Monsters."  The film will get an April 28th digital release before a June 16th Blu-ray and DVD release.

DC TV - Deadline:  Actress Emmanuelle Chriqui has been cast "Lana Lang" in The CW's "Superman & Lois" series.

COMICS - From Brattleboro:  Longtime comic book writer, artist, creator, and publisher, Rick Veitch, has been named the state of Vermon's fourth "cartoonist laureate."

MANGA TO ANIME - From ComicBook:  The "Black Clover" anime will produce its first original story line outside of what is being produced for the "Black Clover" manga.

MANGA TO ANIME - From ScreenRant:  The "Bleach" anime enters its final season and will adapt the "Bleach" manga's "Thousand-Year Blood War" story arc.

COMICS TO FILM - From IndieWire:  Quentin Tarantino apparently once wanted to make a move featuring Marvel's "Luke Cage" with Laurence Fishburne in the lead role, but friends talked him out of it...

X-MEN - From BleedingCool:  It seems that once upon a time, almost five decades ago, X-Men artist John Byrne envisioned a different man behind Wolverine's mask.

DC TV - From Deadline:  The actor Dylan Walsh has been cast as "General Lane," the father of "Lois Lane" in The CW's upcoming TV series, "Superman & Lois."
