Saw "The Dark Knight Rises;" Found it Bloated and Self-Important
I forgot to post this link: http://www.negromancer.com/2012/07/the-dark-knight-rises.html from my movie review blog, Negromancer. I rushed to the local theatre for the earliest show of The Dark Knight Rises, and I knew I was not going to like the movie from the opening air plane hijack set piece. I don't know if Nolan was desperate to start the film off with a bang or if he just doesn't have an overkill filter. And Hans Zimmer needs a muzzle.

Negromancer Reviews "The Amazing Spider-Man"
I forgot to mention this in a post last week: I reviewed the new Spider-Man reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man at my blog, Negromancer.
Keeping with this theme of forgetfulness, I neglected to mention James Horner's lush and rich score for the film. At times, the music is playful, reminding me of Danny Elfman (who scored Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films), and other times it is poignant and moving for the intimate character scenes. Horner's music pounds, sweeps, and soars for the superhero action scenes. Horner establishes the mood and atmosphere and accentuates the action without taking over the movie. Good stuff from a great film composer.

Negromancer Reviews "Men in Black 3"
I saw Men in Black 3 yesterday. It was pleasant and inoffensive, but not the "best Men in Black" as some critics have apparently said (at least, I don't think so). Read the review here. I loved the villain, Boris the Animal, and Josh Brolin certainly brings a touch of poignance to the story, which it needs.
Seeing the movie reminds me that I've never read the original comic book, The Men in Black. I need to.

Negromancer at the Movies with "Dark Shadows"
On Friday, I saw the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp Dark Shadows. I reviewed it at my movie blog, Negromancer, which you can read here.
The gist of it is that I really like Depp as Barnabas Collins, but otherwise, the movie is something of a clunker.

Green Lantern Film Reviewed
I saw Green Lantern and posted a review at Negromancer. The movie has its moments, and it is visually striking, but way too noisy. The visual effects are mostly good, but some of them are surprisingly bad for a big budget flick from a major studio.
The script is bad, although, by the end, Green Lantern becomes the hero he is supposed to be in a rousing finale. Mark Strong is utterly wasted as Sinestro. Most of the characters are extraneous, and once again, the very talented Angela Bassett is way under-utilized.
So far, the box office looks good, perhaps coming in at $55 to $60 million for the weekend. This may be enough to get the studio to greenlight a sequel - hopefully with at least new writers.
