Review: THE WALKING DEAD: The Official Magazine #1

THE WALKING DEAD: THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE #1 (NOV/DEC 2012)
TITAN MAGAZINES – @WalkingDeadMag

WRITERS: Robert Kirkman, Tob Weidmann, Dan Auty, Stuart Barr, Tara Bennett, Jay Bonansinga, Dan Bura, and Bryan Caims
ART: Charlie Adlard
98pp, Color, $9.99 U.S./Canada

The Walking Dead is a black and white comic book series published by Image Comics. It first appeared in late 2003, the creation of writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. Artist Charlie Adlard replaced Moore as of the seventh issue and continues to draw the series, which, as of this writing, recently reached issue #103. The series follows Rick Grimes, his family and friends, and other survivors as the try to stay alive during a zombie apocalypse.

In 2010, a television series, “The Walking Dead,” based on the comic book, debuted on cable television channel, AMC. The Golden Globe Award-nominated series recently began its third season. The Walking Dead has also spawned merchandise such as video games, novels, apparel, (including Halloween costumes), action figures, toy lines, etc.

Like other genre media franchises (Star Wars, Star Trek), The Walking Dead has its own magazine. The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine #1 (November/December 2012) is now walking to newsstands and into mailboxes.

I must admit that I’ve never read a single issue of The Walking Dead comic book, although I’ve been meaning to since it first debuted. I watched the TV series’ debut episode, but I’ve only sporadically watched it since then. But The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine has my back. It is designed and produced not only to inform fans, but also to guide fresh newbie meat into the world of The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine covers everything about The Walking Dead – comics, prose fiction, merchandise, and, of course, the TV series. That includes an interview with Glen Mazzara, the showrunner of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Mazzara even explains what a showrunner does (basically the day to day administration of the production). There is also an interview with the host of “Talking Dead,” Chris Hardwick.

“Choice Cuts,” one of what will be several regular features in the magazine, looks at Michonne, a hugely-popular character since her debut in the comic book. There is also an interview with Danai Gurira, the actress who portrays Michonne on the TV series. We learn, for instance, that Gurira is an award-winning playwright.

Do I have to tell you that there is a Robert Kirkman interview? There is a synopsis of the comic book from issue #1 to #100 and a preview of the TV series’ Season Three. Read the exclusive Walking Dead short story, “Just Another Day at the Office.” Learn about series artist Charlie Adlard and see the variant covers of The Walking Dead #100, including art from Bryan Hitch, Todd McFarlane, Ryan Ottley, Sean Phillips, Frank Quitely, Matthew Roberts, and Marc Silvestri.

There is so much more. And it’s good. Why be objective? The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine is awesome.

Complete Archives of "The Comics Journal" Now Online

THE COMPLETE COMICS JOURNAL ARCHIVES JOIN THE UNDERGROUND AND INDEPENDENT COMICS ARCHIVE FROM ALEXANDER STREET PRESS

July 31st, 2012 – Seattle, WA — Fantagraphics Books, publisher of The Comics Journal, has announced a partnership with Alexander Street Press to make the complete archive of the The Comics Journal available as part of its Underground and Independent Comics online collection. This is the first-ever scholarly online collection for researchers and students of literary and underground comic books and graphic novels, and the inclusion of more than 25,000 pages of interviews, commentary, theory and criticism from the 35 year history of The Comics Journal marks a significant contribution to the academic study of the comics form.

“Most back issues of The Comics Journal are sold out and unavailable,” says Comics Journal founder and Fantagraphics President Gary Groth. “This will allow academics, critics, and historians access to the magazine that's covered the widest range of cartooning for the longest period of time. We believe Alexander Street Press' project serves an important cultural function and we're very pleased to be part of it.”

The Underground and Independent Comics online collection covers the works that inspired the first underground comix from the 1960s (such as works by Basil Wolverton and Harvey Kurtzman), to the first generation of underground cartoonists (including R. Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, Spain Rodriguez and many others) and encompasses modern sequential artists like Gilbert Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez and Daniel Clowes, with over 75,000 pages of comics from the 1950s to present. With the inclusion of The Comics Journal archives, scholars can now similarly trace the roots of comics criticism and have access to the Journal’s incomparable oral history of the field.

Institutions who have already subscribed or purchased the archive include the Library of Congress, British Library, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Notre Dame and many others.

Comics have become an increasingly popular area of academic study, and yet the typical library has only a small selection of graphic novels in the catalog. Underground and Independent Comics solves this problem, collecting thousands of comics and related texts in one, easy-to-use online collection. With multiple combinable search fields, users can sort the materials in the collection by type, coloring, publication date, writer, penciler, inker, character, genre, publisher and more. Scholarship never before possible is now just a few keystrokes away.

“The chance to have access to 100,000 pages of underground and new wave comics in ways that were unimaginable a short time ago should change the face of comics research completely.” — James Danky, faculty of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Aazurn Publishing has announced the full lineup of the first edition of the new Indie Comics Magazine, scheduled for preorder in Diamond Comic Distributors' January 2011 Previews catalog and available ONLY through Previews.

"We've been saying that Indie Comics Magazine is 64 pages of the best story and art from today's independent comic book creators," said Editor Gary Scott Beatty. "The first issue proves that assertion with a talented lineup that reads like a who's who of the indy comic movement."

Appearing in the first issue is Tom Kelly (DC's Zuda), Tim Vigil (Faust), David Branstetter (Straw Man), K.J. Kolka (The Cardinal), Gary Scott Beatty (Jazz: Cool Birth), Anthony Cacioppo (Kaso Comics), Terry Cronin (Students of the Unusual) and Douglas Paszkiewicz (Arsenic Lullaby).

The cover to #1 features a full color painting by Marcus Boas (Heavy Metal).

"We're different than other books," Beatty explained. "We feature done-in-one stories so readers can get a feel for what these creators can do. Short biographies and contact information are included with the stories so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work. These details make Indie Comics Magazine a valuable resource for anyone interested in the world of independent comics."

The number of comic books, graphic novels and online entertainment available today can be overwhelming to a casual reader, said Beatty. "We help readers cut through the reviews and hype to experience these creators' raw talent."

Beatty said he's pleased with the variety of art styles and mix of genres in Indie Comics Magazine. "We were lucky to land different creators with a diverse range of storytelling styles. This is a real cross section of indy comic book genius!"

Indie Comics Magazine is available ONLY through the Previews order magazine at your local comic shop. The first issue is offered in January, 2011's Previews. Information about Indie Comics Magazine is online at http://indiecomicsmagazine.com/.

New Shonen Jump Not Quite the Old Shonen Jump

VIZ MEDIA’S SHONEN JUMP MAGAZINE EVOLVES FOR 2011 WITH A FRESH NEW LOOK AND EXPANDED PRINT AND ONLINE CONTENT

North America’s Most Popular Manga Monthly Begins The Year With Plenty Of New Upgrades Fans Won’t Want To Miss

VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry’s most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, announces the relaunch of its popular SHONEN JUMP monthly manga (graphic novel) magazine, and also grows the publication’s online presence. Beginning with the January 2011 issue, available now from retailers, SHONEN JUMP magazine welcomes the new decade with a fresh, contemporary look, and expanded print and web content.

As part of this upgrade, the magazine also launches several new subscriber-only initiatives on the SHONEN JUMP website at: www.ShonenJump.com. Among these features will be digital subscriber-only premiums and content, as well as the debut of a brand new manga series, NURA: RISE OF THE YOKAI CLAN (rated ‘T’ for Teens) that will be serialized online. This will be SHONEN JUMP’s first title to be serialized digitally on ShonenJump.com.

For its print counterpart, SHONEN JUMP, which continues to be the best-selling manga anthology in North America, debuts 2 new series - the science fiction thriller, PSYREN, and fan favorite YU-GI-OH! 5D’S. As a special treat to both current and new readers, the January 2011 issue will also include a free YU-GI-OH! trading card, The Winged Dragon of Ra, printed with the autograph of original YU-GI-OH! creator Kazuki Takahashi. These titles join other current monthly SHONEN JUMP series, BLEACH, NARUTO and ONE PIECE.

Manga previews are a cornerstone of SHONEN JUMP coverage and this will continue with newly expanded sneak peeks, both online and in print, starting with massive online manga previews of popular series TORIKO and BAKUMAN。. VIZ Media also plans to deliver plenty of fan appreciation throughout 2011 with a variety of contests, sweepstakes and inside information about the exciting and ever-changing world of manga and anime.

“Paying careful attention to all the input from our loyal fans, the SHONEN JUMP team has revamped the magazine, keeping what devotees already know and love and adding in more awesome stuff than before!” says Christopher Boily, Editor-in-Chief. “The world of media and comics is changing and we’re excited to explore the opportunities that now exist for the magazine and our manga. New series like NURA and PSYREN will fit in right alongside NARUTO and BLEACH to create the best manga mix we’ve ever had, both in print and online. And the new look and feel of the magazine is exactly what our fans have been asking us for!”

Marcus Boas Covers Indie Comics Magazine

Marcus Boas Paints Cover for the New Indie Comics Magazine
Indie Comics Magazine Editor Gary Scott Beatty announced today that a Marcus Boas painting will appear on the first issue of the new comic book, scheduled for preorder in Diamond Comic Distributors' January 2011 Previews catalog and available only through Previews.

From paperback book covers to movie posters to Heavy Metal magazine, Marcus Boas has been leaving his mark on sword and sorcery illustration since the 1970s. Boas' style is defined by a skill and tension reminiscent of the pulp magazines and movie posters of the '40s and '50s.

"Indie Comics Magazine is 64 pages of the best story and art from today's independent comic book creators," said Beatty. "It's only fitting that an illustrator with such a long history of impressive genre painting should appear on the cover of our new book."

Just out of art school, Boas painted for Calvin Beck, publisher of Castle of Frankenstein magazine. Influenced by Frank Frazetta and Jim Steranko, Boas illustrated fantasy, adventure, romance and Western paperbacks, and Kung Fu movie posters. Comic book conventions in the '70s and'80s brought him comic book cover work.

Boas is particularly adept at depicting strong, gorgeous females, as on the premiere Indie Comics Magazine cover. Each issue of the comic will feature eight full stories from eight different independent comic book creators, said Beatty. Short biographies and contact information are included with the stories so readers can easily seek out more of the creators' work.

Boas posters and prints, and his latest book, "Enter the Worlds of Heroic Fantasy - Paintings by Marcus Boas" is available at KasoComics.com.

Indie Comics Magazine is available only through the Previews order magazine at your local comic shop. The first issue premieres in Previews January, 2011. Find your local comic shop at 1-888-COMICBOOK (1-888-266- 4226) or online at http://www.comicshoplocator.com/. Information about Indie Comics Magazine is online at http://indiecomicsmagazine.com/.

The Time is Right for Indie Comics Magazine

Indie Comics Magazine Fills a Need for Indy Comic Fans, Creators

The new Indie Comics Magazine Editor Gary Scott Beatty was reading a comic book review when he had an idea. There are countless places independent comic book readers can see news and reviews. Why not offer a source for quality stories from indy comic book creators?

The result was Indie Comics Magazine. The first issue is scheduled for preorder in Diamond Comic Distributors' January 2011 Previews catalog and is available only through Previews. Each issue will feature eight full stories from eight different creators, said Beatty.

"The steady growth of independent comic book publishing since the 1960's underground movement, the 1980's black and white explosion and the 2000's online revolution has led to a staggering number of titles," he explained. "Quality work often never reaches a wide audience. There are so many titles competing for our attention many brilliant creators are simply overlooked."

That is why Beatty, who colors and letters comics and is a Xeric grant winning author and illustrator, brought up the possibility of a monthly indie publication with his many friends in the industry. Indie Comics Magazine is 64 pages of the best story and art from today's independent comic book creators. Each issue will feature eight full stories from eight different creators.

"They couldn't believe no one had thought of it before," he laughed. "Readers can use our magazine as presented, to enjoy the range of talented writers and artists in it, but they can go one step further and visit their favorites online to learn more about what they do and, maybe, buy some of their work."

Short biographies and contact information are included with the done-in-one stories so readers can easily seek out more from their favorites.

Advancing technology is bringing with it an onslaught of entertainment choices, said Beatty. "It can be overwhelming. We can help readers cut through the noise and find indie comic creators who are definitely worth a second look."

Indie Comics Magazine is available only through the Previews order magazine at your local comic shop. The first issue premieres in January, 2011's Previews. Information about Indie Comics Magazine is online at http://indiecomicsmagazine.com/.

New Issue of George Perez Magazine Now Available

from publisher Tony Lorenz:

PACESETTER: THE GEORGE PEREZ MAGAZINE #10

After a year and a half since the last issue, a new issue of PACESETTER is now available. This marks the 10-year anniversary of The George Pérez Newsletter/PACESETTER magazine. 13 issues in total have been published over the last 10 years.

This issue of PACESETTER #10 is an Avengers-themed issue, 72-pages, perfect bound format with glossy full color cover that retails for $9.95. PACESETTER gets major inspiration from the Kirby Collector magazine. Each issue has articles, artwork (many never-before-seen images... and in this issue you get over 20 penciled pages of George’s work on the Avengers), interviews (this issue as the legendary artist Pablo Marcos), theme checklist, trivia, news and much more….

There is one major change to PACESETTER: with this issue it will sadly be no longer available through Diamond's PREVIEW catalog. Like many other Americans that have been affected by the economy, I can no longer afford to go through Diamond at this time. But thanks to the relatively new print-on-demand option, it breathes new life into my magazine. To order copies of PACESETTER #10 you go to the following link below. At Lulu.com, they even offer a free summer shipping option, and accept payment via PayPal and credit cards.

http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/pacesetter-%2310/10993644

Next issue is the Teen Titans anniversary issue. I’m looking for artwork for the gallery section. For more info on how to contribute, drop me an e-mail at TLorenzp@yahoo.com. Everyone that contributes gets a free copy of the issue that your material appears in, plus credit in the issue, and George receives every issue. I am looking for material for future issuse, because my magazine is only as good as the contributions. Again, drop me an e-mail at TLorenzp@yahoo.com.

We go by the simple motto: FOR PEREZ FANS, BY PEREZ FANS
