TOKYOPOP'S "Van Von Hunter" at MockFest 2010

TOKYOPOP's Van Von Hunter announced as Official Selection for Hollywood-based comedy film festival MockFest 2010

TOKYOPOP, the leading manga-lifestyle entertainment company, is proud that its mockumentary feature film Van Von Hunter has been announced as an official selection for MockFest 2010, a festival celebrating the best comedies and mockumentaries from around the world. Van Von Hunter, starring voice actor extraordinaire Yuri Lowenthal (Naruto, Ben 10), marks the feature film directorial debut of producer and entrepreneur Stu Levy, along with visual effects supervisor and filmmaker Steven Calcote. The pair wrote, produced, and appeared in the film.

Inspired by and based upon the manga series created by Mike Schwark and Ron Kaulfersch, Van Von Hunter is a live-action comedy that follows its title character on a journey deep into the heart of manga and anime fandom. From the mythical world of Dikay, to the cold, hard streets of Hollywood, then across the ocean to Tokyo, this Van-tastic voyage is also filled with cameos by top manga and anime personalities as it embraces otaku culture around the globe.

"We are truly thrilled to see Van Von Hunter so well-received by MockFest 2010," says Levy. "It's just a real shame they took our documentary, which extracts the shocking truth about Van Von Hunter's glorious rise from slayer of beasts to big man in Japan, and presumed it to be a "mockumentary" and a comedy. Everything in that film is true--perhaps sad, but indeed true. And anyone who attempts to laugh at it is laughing at all of us. We're sort of outraged--but in a good way."

Van Von Hunter will be screening at MockFest on Sunday, November 14, and there will be a Q&A session with the filmmakers after the screening. For more details on Van Von Hunter and MockFest, go to http://www.mockfilmfest.com/.

Charles Burns at Fantagraphics Bookstore on October 30th

Charles Burns Returns to Seattle on October 30 with Spooky New Book

Charles Burns was among a trio of gifted cartoonists to emerge from The Evergreen State College in the mid-1970s. Together, Burns and fellow Evergreen alumni Matt Groening and Lynda Barry altered the course of contemporary comix and left an indelible mark on regional culture. Burns makes a rare return visit to his native Seattle on Saturday, October 30 to celebrate the publication of his amazing new graphic novel X’ED OUT with a slide talk, art exhibition, and book signing at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery. His idiosyncratic horror-story sensibility is perfect for the Halloween-eve occasion.

Burns began his career as a fine artist in Seattle while publishing illustrations and his “Big Baby” cartoon in The Rocket magazine, developing his signature stark-contrast rendering style. Burns also composed covers for Bruce Pavitt’s seminal Sub Pop cassette fanzine, the forerunner to the celebrated record label. On a visit to New York, Burns came to the attention of cartoonist Art Spiegelman, who subsequently published his work in the influential anthology RAW. The rest, as they say, is history. Spiegelman published the collected BIG BABY on his RAW imprint, and Seattle-based publisher Fantagraphics Books produced his influential BLACK HOLE serial, as well as graphic albums SKIN DEEP and EL BORBAH (in addition to reprinting BIG BABY.)

X’ED OUT continues the artist’s examination of the furtive insecurities of adolescence becoming manifested in bizarre and horrific consequences. In a departure from Burns’ prior work, the current graphic novel is presented in full color.

The reception at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale Street, will feature a brief slide talk and book signing. An exhibition of recent fine art prints will be complemented by Burns’ original drawings and related Sub Pop ephemera courtesy of label co-founder Bruce Pavitt.

Please join us to celebrate the lasting legacy of Charles Burns on Seattle’s civic culture and the debut of his graphic novel X’ED OUT on Saturday, October 30 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Spooky Halloween costumes are welcome but not required. All ages, free admission.

School of Visual Arts Exhibits Work by Over 100 Comics Artists

Press release:

School of Visual Arts Presents "Ink Plots: The Tradition of the Graphic Novel at SVA"

Comic Art Legends and Rising Stars Celebrated in Exhibition, Talks and Film

See Gary Panter, Dash Shaw, Jerry Robinson, Ray Billingsley, David Sandlin and Jerry Moriarty Live On Stage at SVA

New York, October 1, 2010 - School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents "Ink Plots: The Tradition of the Graphic Novel at SVA," an exhibition of original drawings, books, prints and animation by over 100 artists. "Ink Plots" traces the development of sequential art over four decades with selections by SVA faculty members and showcases the work of SVA alumni who are pushing the boundaries of the graphic novel today. "Ink Plots" is curated by Marshall Arisman, chair of the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department, and Thomas Woodruff, chair of the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department. The exhibition will be on view at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26 Street, 15th floor, New York City, from October 8 - November 6, 2010. A reception will be held on Thursday, October 14 from 5:30 - 7pm.

"'Ink Plots' pays tribute to some of the most important artists responsible for the invention and development of the graphic novel," says co-curator Arisman. "The years many of these artists spent teaching at SVA has greatly influenced the present generation of graphic novelists."

Participating current and former SVA faculty members include Sal Amendola, R. O. Blechman, Sue Coe, Will Eisner, Tom Gill, Edward Gorey, Burne Hogarth, Klaus Janson, Frances Jetter, Ben Katchor, Peter Kuper, Harvey Kurtzman, Keith Mayerson, David Mazzucchelli, Jerry Moriarty, Mark Newgarden, Gary Panter, Jerry Robinson, David Sandlin, Walter Simonson and Art Spiegelman.

"We're in the midst of the new platinum age for sequential art," says Woodruff, co-curator of the exhibition. "Using multicultural influences and ambitious new formats, SVA alumni are expanding the boundaries of the graphic novel to include traditional and experimental adult-themed long-format works, diarist comics, fantasy epics, and cutting edge examples of 'Amerimanga' the hybridized East-West form taking hold in our cartooning canon."

Participating SVA alumni include Russell Braun, Sungyoon Choi, Erik Craddock, Pascal Dizin, Nathan Fox, June Kim, Bill Plympton, Nate Powell, Lauren Redniss, Dash Shaw, Koren Shadmi, Raina Telgemeier, Michael Townsend, Steve Uy and Sara Varon, among others. A full list of participating SVA alumni can be found below.

Comics legend Will Eisner is often credited with coining the term "graphic novel" with his 1978 work, A Contract with God, which tells four related stories of Jewish immigrant life in 1930s New York. A critical and commercial success, Eisner's landmark work, along with the popular satire of Harvey Kurtzman's Mad magazine and Burne Hogarth's pioneering Tarzan of the Apes (1972), established a new genre of literature, one that embraced the comic format while telling mature, complex stories. In 1986, graphic novels entered the mainstream with the publication of Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus.

From the psychedelic experimentations of Dash Shaw's high school melodrama Bodyworld (2010) to the teen nightmares Raina Telgemeier poignantly details in her fictionalized memoir Smile (2010), the graphic novel has continued to challenge conventional storytelling in form and content. The genre's popularity has also grown exponentially in the past 40 years, allowing artists and publishers to take greater risks. As seen in the 9/11 memoir American Widow (2008), illustrated by Sungyoon Choi, or in Nate Powell's Eisner award-winning exploration of mental illness, Swallow Me Whole (2008), the limits of the graphic novel are still being tested.

Carol Tyler at Fantagraphics Bookstore 9/11

Meet acclaimed cartoonist Carol Tyler at Fantagraphics Books this Saturday!

YOU’LL NEVER KNOW Carol Tyler (unless you come to Fantagraphics Bookstore this Saturday, September 11.)

Illustrious cartoonist Carol Tyler will appear this Saturday, September 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery to celebrate the publication of YOU’LL NEVER KNOW Book 2 with an art exhibition and book signing.

Tyler was among the early female practitioners of underground comix, creating remarkably revealing autobiographical narratives in a singular visual style. Her ongoing trilogy YOU’LL NEVER KNOW continues this tradition and has received broad critical acclaim. Of the first installment in the series, THE NEW YORK TIMES commented, “It’s impossible not to compare You’ll Never Know with Art Spiegelman’s Maus.”

Reviewing the latest volume, which debuts at Saturday’s event, Eric Scigliano of SEATTLE METROPOLITAN suggests, “Two famous precedents, Art Spiegelman’s Maus and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, seem almost one-dimensional by comparison.”

Join us on Saturday evening at the bookstore to meet this extraordinary artist. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street (at Airport Way S.) only minutes from downtown Seattle. Phone 206.658.0110. This event coincides with the lively Georgetown Art Attack featuring visual and performing arts events throughout the historic industrial arts corridor. (Saturday’s Art Attack includes our own Martin Bland with the Tom Price Desert Classic playing for the 7th annual “Beer Bust” breast cancer fundraiser at neighboring Smarty Pants, benefiting Gilda’s House Seattle.)

Jerry Robinson at 2010 Friends of Old Time Radio Convention

There is a bunch of comic book-related activity coming up at the 2010 Friends of Old Time Radio Convention.

Jerrry Robinson is also going to appear at the 2010 Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, alongside Wildcat and Dondi creater Irwin Hasen. Hasen is appearing to discuss his work on a comic strip he did based on the radio show “The Goldbergs” while Robinson is attending as his winglegend. Both will discuss their careers and generally be available to sign autographs and talk with fans. If you don’t want to meet your heroes across a rope or at the end of a line, this is the convention for you.

In addition, the Saturday dinner program will include an all-star recreation of an episode of The Adventures of Superman, the radio program that did so much to establish the Superman legend.

The 35th Annual Friends of Old Time Radio Convention (http://www.fotr.net/) will take place October 21-24 2010 at the Ramada Plaza hotel in Newark, NJ. The four day event features live recreations of classic old time radio programs with all-star casts as well as memorabilia, music, panel discussions, autographs and historical presentations. The convention is a great way to meet and show appreciation for the veterans who made old time radio great as well as get to know some of the younger actors who are working to keep the tradition alive.

The invited guest list looks great so far. I know everyone will enjoy seeing the great Simon Jones ("Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") again. Shirley Mitchell (Lelia Ransom on Gildersleeve), New York area television host Chuck McCann, WXYZ veteran Elaine Hyman ("The Lone Ranger"), ABC announcer Bill Owen and Gloria McMillan (Harriet Conklin on Our Miss Brooks) are also back for more. Local New York talk show legend Joe “Nostalgia King” Franklin will recreate his show live on stage, bringing his own surprises guests along. Another great returning guest is Ivan Curry, star of “Bobby Benson and the B-Bar B Riders” on old time radio. The guest list changes frequently, so keep checking the website for updates.

Thursday - Sunday programs include an afternoon program that consists of a recreation, panel discussions and dealer rooms. The evening program features a buffet dinner in which there is at least one special guest at each table and all-star recreations. It's a great way to socialize with the stars as well as see them perform. On Sunday, there is a buffet breakfast and panel with remaining guests.

Shows scheduled for recreation this year include The Great Gildersleeve, The Adventures of Sam Spade, The First Nighter, Fibber McGee & Molly, Columbia Workshop, Screen Guild Theater and The Adventures of Superman.

Full information on the convention including room rates (historically low right now at $75/AAA) and registration information for the convention itself is available at http://www.fotr.net/.

Please contact Sean Dougherty, publicity coordinator, at 201-739-2541 or SeanDD@optonline.net or @doughertysean on Twitter, or The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention on Facebook for more information.

This year's Harvey's will take place Saturday night with Key note speaker Mark Waid and hilarious emcee, Scott Kurtz. This year, Eva Ink Publishing will once again be donating to the event as a gift bag sponsor with a 2011 calendar (better to keep track of next year's BCC, ya know), as well as a signed collectable Spartan X trading card from Michael Golden.

This show is always jam packed and full of surprises!

And, with a location as easy to get to as Baltimore, how could you NOT be there!

Paul Pope Debuts New THB at Baltimore Comic-Con

Paul Pope's THB: Comics from Mars #2 Debuts at Baltimore Comic-Con!

AdHouse Books is proud to announce the Baltimore Comic-Con Exclusive Debut of THB: Comics from Mars #2 by Paul Pope.

This comic continues to add to the epic tale that is THB. It contains 6.5 stories (or thereabouts) that take you further into the world of HR Watson and all the androids, Martians, and cartoon characters that populate the red planet -- still larger than life and just as sweet.

"This comic is the 'sister' to the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con THB: Comics from Mars #1, and we could not be happier than to be releasing it at the Baltimore show," said Chris Pitzer, Adhouse Books Publisher. "It was all very last minute, but you wouldn't know that from the quality of the stories."

Paul Pope, creator of THB, been called the "Comics Destroyer", the "Jim Morrison of comics", and "Comics' Petit Prince". His work has won multiple Eisner Awards and has been part of a major collection of DKNY.

Paul's return to the Baltimore Comic-Con this year features a panel discussion on Sunday from 3-4 titled: PAUL POPE VS. BOB SCHRECK - A CAGED EVENT. Don't miss this satisfaction-guaranteed, fists-a-flying blood match by joining award-winning multi-talented storyteller, Paul Pope, in an examination of his creative process and how he suffers under the heel of his terrifying editor.
