Leroy Douresseaux on Hotwire: Deep Cut #3

HOTWIRE: DEEP CUT #3 (OF 3)
RADICAL PUBLISHING
CREATORS: Steve Pugh and Warren Ellis
WRITER/ARTIST: Steve Pugh
LETTERS: Steve Pugh
28pp, Color, $3.50 U.S.

Hotwire: Deep Cut, the sequel to Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead, comes to an end. Deep Cut is written and drawn by Steve Pugh and released by Radical Publishing.

Hotwire takes place in a future where the dead return as blue-light ghosts. They feed off the electromagnetic waste of billions of wireless devices, but while most drift about harmless and witless, some can take more solid form and become very dangerous. Detective Exorcist Alice Hotwire, a character created by Pugh with Warren Ellis, battles those blue-lights and any persons or entities that would use them for nefarious purposes.

The latest Hotwire miniseries comes to an end in Hotwire: Deep Cut #3. Alice has to stop Thomas Epping, a dead soldier brought back by some exotic technology, before Epping and his ragtag army of blue lights enter the city. Alice and her partner, Detective Peter Mobey, have to save the day before Bertus Rantz, the boss of the private security firm, Bear Claw Security. Rantz and his mercenaries plan to use a proto-type “ghost-killer,” called Soul-Easter, which will make everything worse.

As much as I’ve enjoyed Hotwire: Deep Cut, I kept thinking that it could not maintain its exceptionally high, high quality even throughout its short three-issue run. Of course, it did. Imaginative, inventive, and fun, every exciting page of Deep Cut is a dazzling mix of exotic super tech and science fiction horror. One of the signs of a good comic book is that you immediately miss it as soon as you finish reading it, and I can’t wait for Alice Hotwire to return.

Leroy Douresseaux on Driver for the Dead #3

DRIVER FOR THE DEAD #3
RADICAL PUBLISHING

WRITER: John Heffernan
PENCILS/INKS: Leonardo Manco
PAINTS: Kinsun Loh, Jerry Choo
LETTERS: Todd Klein
56pp, Color, $4.99

Radical Comics’ action, voodoo, horror comic book miniseries, Driver for the Dead comes to an exciting, ghoulishly played ending.

Set in the heart of Louisiana, Driver for the Dead is written by John Heffernan (a screenwriter on the film, Snakes on a Plane) and drawn by Leonardo Manco (Hellblazer). The series follows Alabaster Graves, the Driver for the Dead. In his custom-made hearse, Black Betty, Graves handles dangerous (like vampires) or supernaturally-involved corpses (the not-quite-dead).

In Driver for the Dead #3, Graves prepares for his final battle against the centuries-old necromancer, Uriah Fallow. The prize is the enchanted body of beloved New Orleans-based healer, Mose Freeman, and Mose’s great-granddaughter, Marissa Freeman. The true natures of Graves, Fallow, and Marissa are also revealed.

With its wham-bam, thank-you-dead-ma’am ending, Driver for the Dead delivers what its hellishly auspicious beginning promised – a damn good horror comic book story. This mix of Hellblazer’s John Constantine and The Transporter’s Frank Martin is a thrilling read that gives B-movie horror a thumping occult upgrade.

Writer John Heffernan’s script to close out this story is darker, more violent, and certainly creepier in its occult elements. Leonardo Manco’s art, with Kinsun Loh and Jerry Choo’s perfect-for-horror-comics colors, transports readers from shadowy swamps to a cursed plantation and finally to sunny, magical New Orleans. Heffernan and Manco can take comfort in our discomfort; they’ve created ghastly magic with Driver for the Dead.

Leroy Douresseaux on Earp: Saints for Sinners #1

EARP: SAINTS FOR SINNERS #1
RADICAL PUBLISHING
CREATORS: Matt Cirulnick and David Manpearl
WRITERS: M. Zachary Sherman and Matt Cirulnick
LAYOUTS: Joe Benitez, Rod Pereira, and J.K. Woodward
ARTISTS: Mack Chater, Martin Montiel, and Colin Lorimer
COLORS: Kyushik Shin
LETTERS: Rus Wooton
COVER: Alex Maleev
72pp, Color, $5.99

Created by Hollywood types, Matt Cirulnick and David Manpearl, Earp: Saints for Sinners is a modern-day re-imagining of a classic Western hero, Wyatt Earp. This new Earp story is set in a new future where an event called “Black Thirty” sets off a second Great Depression.

Out of the chaos rises the celebrity bank robber, a kind of Robin Hood meets John Dillinger. There was, however, one man who brought them in to justice and shot down the ones he didn’t bring in, and that was Wyatt Earp. Earp collared more most-wanted men than anyone in history, but after a violent assignment claimed the life of his brother, Virgil Earp, Wyatt became a businessman in the only boomtown left in America, Las Vegas.

In Earp: Saints for Sinners #1, Wyatt’s younger, brother, Morgan Earp, shows up bloodied and beaten. That sets off Wyatt’s memories of the last several years, recounting how he went from NYPD to the U.S. Marshals. Now, Morgan is wanted by the only law that matters in Las Vegas, the Pinkertons, and their leader, Allan Pinkerton will use this opportunity to get rid of the Earps, once and for all. Will Doc Holliday arrive in time?

If you don’t get confused by the constant use of flashback in this first issue, you will love this shoot ‘em up as comic book, Earp: Saints for Sinners. It is a bit longish, and the characters seem as if they’re not quite out of the development stage. The art with shimmering, watercolor-like colors is perfect for the series lovely violence. Not only does the color make the violence pulsate, but it also makes the various cities and locales seem exotic. This comic, however, owes more to modern crime films (like Heat) than it does Western cinema.

I’d like to read more of this.

Leroy Douresseaux on Ryder on the Storm #2

RYDER ON THE STORM #2
RADICAL PUBLISHING

WRITER: David Hine
ARTIST: Wayne Nichols
COLORS: Feigan Chong and Sansan Saw of Sixth Creation
LETTERS: Richard Starkings and Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt
COVER: Francesco “Matt” Mattina
56pp, Color, $4.99 U.S.

Before you read this review, let me offer this SPOILER ALERT: don’t read this if you have not read #1.

Ryder on the Storm is a supernatural-detective comic book from Radical Publishing. It blends elements and/or styles of Aliens, Blade Runner, Hellblazer, and Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.

Written by David Hine and drawn by Wayne Nichols, the series focuses on Ryder, a private eye hired by mysterious beauty Katrina Petruska to investigate the horrifically bizarre suicide of her lover, Michael Hudson. The crime is apparently tied to the Daemons, an ancient race that once ruled over the entire world.

As Ryder on the Storm #2 opens, Ryder is still dealing with the fact that he is a Daemon. The last Daemon hunter, Charles Monk tells him the history of the Daemon (the condensed version, of course). However, there are more secrets galore, as Ryder learns about the “Abaddon” and meets Rebecca Danton, who is not only the matriarch of the Daemon clan, the Dantons, but also so much more.

While I can describe Ryder on the Storm as many things, I can best describe it as good comics. Writer David Hine delivers something that is gritty and edge with gore, but is strangely smooth and silky. Hine weaves a good back story and lore for the narrative, but builds intensity and also anticipation for the horror that is coming.

Perhaps, artist Wayne Nichols is the one who provides the smooth. His clean drawing style and crystal clear storytelling reveals all the darkness Hine creates. The colors by Feigan Chong and Sansan Saw of Sixth Creation create the ambience of a storm quietly building – the calm before the sure-to-be-fun ending.

Leroy Douresseaux on Abattoir #2

ABATTOIR #2 (OF 6)
RADICAL PUBLISHING
CREATOR: Darren Lynn Bousman
CONCEPT: Michael Peterson
WRITERS: Rob Levin and Troy Peteri
ARTIST: Bing Cansino and Rodell Noora
COLORS: Andrei Pervukhin and Drazenka Kimpel
LETTERS: Troy Peteri
COVER: Tae Young Choi
28pp, Color, $3.50 U.S.

Like quite a few Radical Publishing titles, the new horror comic book miniseries, Abattoir, is the creation of someone involved in the filmmaking industry.  Abattoir is the creation of screenwriter and movie director, Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II-IV).

Set in the late 1980s, Abbatoir takes place in a sunny Middle America that is also home to hidden darkness and brutal murder.  The lead character is cop turned real estate agent, Richard Ashwalt. Struggling to sell the Mitchell house where a brutal massacre took place, Richard meets a very strange old man, Jebediah Crone, who wants to buy the house before even before it is finished being cleaned. Richard’s problems mount when he learns that he is the subject of a homicide investigation.

In Abattoir #2, Jebediah Crone continues to push Richard into selling him the Mitchell house by visiting Richard’s own home for dinner. Richard also learns that he is definitely tied to a brutal murder by physical evidence. He comes to believe that Crone is the reason for the strange turn his life has taken and begins an investigation of the old man.

Although it is as ghoulish, if not as brutal, as Bousman’s Saw films, Abattoir is turning out to be an exceptional horror comic book. As the American comic book market needs some diversity in genre, Abattoir is perfect for readers looking for something different in comic books. Gothic, macabre, and mysterious, Abattoir, with this issue, slowly creeps into Lovecraft territory, with its ghastly dreamscapes and a sense of an overwhelming, but mysterious supernatural.

While the writers get all the genre bits right, they don’t seem to be as committed to the characters, all of whom are either shallow or just types. Still, the writers and artists have come together as one twisted creative unit and have presented a horror mystery that is a dark and tasty spin on the whodunit while staying true to the scary.

It seems from the get-go that Abattoir is determined to give its characters and readers scary story fun. Fans of horror comics will love this kind of hell.  I like this second issue more than I liked the first, and I'm certainly looking forward to the next issue, which is scheduled to ship in February.

Leroy Douresseaux on Time Bomb #3

TIME BOMB #3

RADICAL PUBLISHING
CREATORS/WRITERS: Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray
ART: Paul Gulacy
COLORS: Rain Beredo
LETTERS: John J. Hill
COVER: Paul Gulacy and Rain Beredo
56pp, Color, $4.99

Time Bomb is a science fiction comic book created and written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray (Jonah Hex, Power Girl) and drawn by still-going-strong industry veteran, Paul Gulacy. The series opens in the year 2012 and finds that the human race has 72 hours to live! Why? The Omega Bomb, a relic of Nazi Germany, was accidentally launched, unleashing a horrible virus.

Jack McCrea, team leader; Ken Weinhauser, tech-ops specialist; Peggy Medina, deadly science expert; and Christian Grainger, strategist are four specialists assigned by the New World Order to save the world. They are sent back in time and their target is the day before the bomb was discovered, in an attempt to prevent the disaster. However, the Time Bomb sends them back seven decades earlier and drops them in the heart of Germany towards the end of World War II.

In Time Bomb #3, the mission to save the world comes to an explosive conclusion. Jack and a lovely double agent are imprisoned in the underground bunker where the Omega Bomb sits. Jack is also about to learn the shocking true identity of the Omega Bomb’s sinister creator. Meanwhile, Ken, Peggy, and Christian make an attempt to rescue Jack, but their own freedom is also in jeopardy. And a legendary player enters the game.

One can praise Time Bomb for being consistently good, but what it was consistent at was being freaking good. If I could describe the speed at which I read this to driving, that comparison would be that I read Time Bomb #3 at breakneck speed. It’s easily one of the very best comic books of the year, and it is certainly way better as an action comic book than many films were as action movies. Also, with his excellent art for this series, Paul Gulacy proves that after four decades drawing comic books, he is still at the top of his game, which is above many other artists’ games.

Leroy Douresseaux on Radical Premiere's" Damaged/Hollow Point"

DAMAGED/HOLLOW POINT FLIPBOOK
RADICAL PUBLISHING

DAMAGED
CREATORS: Michael Schwarz and John Schwarz
WRITER: David Lapham
ARTIST: Denis Calero
COVER: Alex Maleev

HOLLOW POINT
CREATOR: Ron L. Brinkerhoff
WRITER: David Hine
ARTIST: Elia Bonetti
PAINTS: Ong Chew Peng
COVER: Tamas Gaspar
28pp, Color, $1.00

Radical Publishing has published a preview of two upcoming series as a “flipbook” under the Radical Premiere imprint. Damaged is a crime comic created by Michael Schwarz and John Schwarz of Full Clip Productions, a venture with actor Sam Worthington (Avatar).

According to Radical, Damaged focuses on “two brothers committed to justice in different ways – one inside the law, one violently beyond it.” The 12-page preview of Damaged introduces Capt. Frank Lincoln, who, while investigating a slaughter of Russian mobsters, discovers that a ghost from his past may be behind the massacre.

The second preview is of Hollow Point, a crime comic created by screenwriter Ron L. Brinkerhoff (the Kevin Costner-Ashton Kutcher film, The Guardian). Hollow Point focuses on an assassin who survives a near fatal gunshot and according to Radical, “…begins to experience disturbing visions from beyond the grave. He soon realizes the bullet meant to kill him has opened a third eye into the spirit realm.” None of that happens in this 12-page preview.

Both series are intriguing, which I think is the whole point of these “Radical Premiere” comic books – pique the interest of as many readers as possible. At the cover price of $1, readers can discover a title they might like, especially if they are fans of a previewed title’s genre, for little financial risk. Radical Publishing is certainly good at genre, for instance, matching a quality crime writer with an artist whose graphic style and storytelling is ideal for crime comics.

Honestly, I will probably read Hollow Point… because I’ll probably get a review copy. I wouldn’t seek it out otherwise, although I am intrigued by what I read. Damaged, however, I am ready to read now (although it isn’t due until next summer). It looks like a gritty, brutal, violent tale with some elements similar to The Punisher. I like how the dialogue colors some of the characters as cruel and cynical. The art by Dennis Calero is solid, but I like how Calero twists and distorts the faces and figures to embellish mood and character.

In the final analysis, Damage/Hollow Point successfully previews two new crime series that intrigue.

Leroy Douresseaux on After Dark #2

AFTER DARK #2

RADICAL PUBLISHING
CREATORS: Antoine Fuqua and Wesley Snipes
WRITER: Peter Milligan
ARTIST: Leonardo Manco
PAINTS: Kinsun Loh, Jerry Choo, Sansan Saw
LETTERS: Clayton Cowles
COVER: Francesco “Matt” Mattina
56pp, Color, $4.99

After Dark is a Radical Publishing comic book series created by director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and actor Wesley Snipes (Blade). This science fiction series is actually written by Peter Milligan (Hellblazer).

After Dark is set in the future on an Earth that exists in a state of near-perpetual darkness. Civilization is mostly confined to domed cities, with Solar City being the most populated. Some of the populace lives in a drug-addled stupor; others riot either because they have a cause or because they are bored. The rulers of Solar City decide that Angel, a messianic figure who hasn’t been seen in decades, can tame the populace. They enlist Omar, a Bedouin drifter, to guide a rag-tag team composed of specialists and known criminals into the wilds outside the city to find Angel.

After Dark #2 opens in the disastrous aftermath of Omar’s mission to save the ill Trooper Jones. Now, the Bedouin is left in the darkness with Ana, a femme fatale, and the gang brawler, “Monster” Monclare. The trio eventually rejoins the mission and the group resumes the trip to Angel’s last known location, Archipelago City, where they find more than they expected.

This second issue of After Dark is a much better read than the first. For one thing, Peter Milligan does something at which he is immensely good: write character drama for science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and After Dark is a blend of all three. Getting to know these characters makes the story a much better read, and, combined with the interesting plot twists and quirks, the characters make After Dark that much more attractive. As usual, anything drawn by Leonardo Manco is good graphical storytelling, and the paints by the team of Kinsun Loh, Jerry Choo, Sansan Saw bring out Manco’s best artistic traits.

Fans of post-apocalyptic science fiction comic books and Peter Milligan’s work will want to try After Dark.

I Reads You Review: Ryder on the Storm #0

RYDER ON THE STORM No. 0
RADICAL PUBLISHING

WRITER: David Hine
ARTIST: Wayne Nichols
COLORS: Feigan Chong and Sansan Saw of Sixth Creation
LETTERS: Richard Starkings and Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt
COVER: Francesco “Matt” Mattina
16pp, Color, $1.00 U.S.

Ryder on the Storm is a supernatural-detective comic book from Radical Publishing. Written by David Hine and drawn by Wayne Nichols, the story focuses on Ryder. He is a private eye hired by mysterious beauty Katrina Petruska to investigate the horrifically bizarre suicide of her lover, Michael Hudson.

According to information provided by Radical, the case will lead Ryder to discovering that daemons walk among humanity. He will have to team up with the last daemon hunter, Charles Monk, to end the reign of ancient evil that rules over the city, while discovering terrifying truths about himself.

Ryder on the Storm #0 is a 16-page preview of the upcoming series, and there is just enough to remind the reader that the occult detective has been done to death. In fact, I can’t find anything in this preview to make me want to read more except…

I am a believer in David Hine, so I’m willing to read more before I get all judgmental. I do like the art by Wayne Nichols with colors by Feigan Chong and Sansan Saw of Sixth Creation. The art has a visual mode that is perfect for this occult detective tale and that would probably be perfect for DC Comics’ Hellblazer.

I Reads You Review: The Rising #0

RADICAL PUBLISHING
CREATOR/WRITER: E. Max Frye
ARTIST: J.P. Targete
LETTERS: John J. Hill
28pp, Color, $1.00 U.S.

The Rising is an upcoming science fiction miniseries from Radical Publishing. It is created and written by screenwriter E. Max Frye (who wrote an episode of HBO’s Band of Brothers) and artist J.P. Targete (who is apparently an illustrator and concept artist for Pixar’s John Carter of Mars film adaptation)

The Rising #0 is a $1.00-priced, 24-page introduction and launch of the upcoming miniseries. Based on how Radical has described the series, the story takes place in an indeterminate future, but that future takes place after years of war and economic chaos. When mankind was teetering on the verge of thermonuclear extinction, a militaristic alien force, the Drac, invades the planet. The release of a deadly virus apparently causes the Drac to destroy Earth’s defense forces and to massacre most of the human population. The Drac stabilize the planet, and some humans begin to see them as saviors, but those humans who do not rebel. One of them is Jarrett Jakes.

The Rising reminds me of the 1980s television science fiction franchise, V (which was revived by ABC in 2009). In a way, The Rising is standard alien armada invades Earth science fiction (think Independence Day), but its war on terror allusions give it relevance to current affairs. Perhaps, this series will be some metaphor or parable about imperialist ambitions, importing democracy on a gun barrel, and/or authoritarian and totalitarian governments. There is also a scene in this preview that reminds me of a scene in the Oscar-nominated film, Joyeux Noel, in which an Anglican bishop implores British soldiers to kill all Germans. The Rising has some good action scenes, so Frye may plan on it being as smart as it intends to be kick-ass.

As much as I like Frye’s concept and story, I am smitten with artist J.P. Targete’s lovely painted comic book art. First, his storytelling is as good as his composition, and as a painter creating comic book art, he is more in line with the artist I consider to be the gold standard in painting comic book art, Daniel Brereton, than he is with Alex Ross, whose work is beautiful, but is not really comic book art.

I look forward to the regular series, and I think readers who like science fiction comics would do well to look for this.
