Seven to Eternity created by Rick Remender and Jerome Opena
Seven to Eternity is a new fantasy comic book series created by writer Rick Remender and artist Jerome Opena. Colorist Matt Hollingsworth and letterer Rus Wooton complete the creative team. The series focuses on a dying knight from a disgraced house who must choose between a desperate bid for freedom or the gifts of an evil God.
Seven to Eternity #1 opens on the world of Zhal. There, “the God of Whispers” rules with fear over an entire kingdom. Also known as “the Mud King,” this dark tyrant will give you everything your heart desires – if you listen to what he has to say. After an attack on his homestead, which leads to the death of a family member, disgraced knight Adam Osidis decides to fight back. But first, he will do something he knows he should not, hear what the God of Whispers has to say.
First issues, even those by veteran and/or acclaimed creators, can be tricky, especially in the modern era when stories seem more decompressed than ever. Writers are stingy with character revelations, often offering information as nothing more than a trickle. Plots plod along, teasing with explosive sequences that don't necessarily speed the story. Artists offer beautiful panoramas and vistas that are alluring, but also don't necessarily speed-the-plow of the narrative.
Seven to Eternity #1 is different. Poetic and lyrical exposition and dialogue unites with beautiful art dressed in splendid covers, Seven to Eternity is straight-forward about the hero's dilemmas and the obstacles he faces. Writer Rick Remender generously reveals his character's bravery as he simultaneously declares his shame. By the end of the first issue, the reader knows the conflict and those in conflict (for the most part). Readers are not left hanging.
Jerome Opena tells this story with an expressive sweep that also captures the intimate and gritty details. His compositions and graphical storytelling make Seven to Eternity #1 a unique debut. This comic book recalls Michael Moorcock fantasy and the science fiction and fantasy comics of the 1970s and 1980s that appeared in Heavy Metal and Epic magazines and others that were published by Pacific Comics and Star Reach. However, Seven to Eternity also moves like a Western thriller that ambles to the sounds of Kentucky bluegrass notes.
There is a reason Seven to Eternity #1 is selling quickly. Imaginative, inventive, and visually alluring, it promises to be like no other fantasy comic book we have seen in a long time.

Review: PUNKS: The Comic #3
PUNKS: THE COMIC #3
IMAGE COMICS – @ImageComics
CREATORS: Joshua Hale Fialkov and Kody Chamberlain – @JoshFialkov @KodyChamberlain
COVER: Kody Chamberlain
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (December 2014)
Rated T+ / Teen Plus
I'm just getting to the third issue of Punks: The Comic. This series is a revival of writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and artist Kody Chamberlain's 2007 small press comic book, Punks. Chamberlain produces Punks' “original art” by cutting up various photographic images and compiling them to create the characters, settings, and storytelling. Punks focuses on a quartet of cut-ups: Dog, Skull, Fist, and Abe Lincoln.
As Punks: The Comic #3 opens, Abe is readying their humble abode for his family's arrival. It's Thanksgiving, a time for family gatherings. Skull, Fist, and Dog aren't to excited about this holiday visit. Can they get excited about the ACLU, Sean Connery, and some Baldwin brothers?
[Punks: The Comic #3 includes some story pages from the original Punks comix and a strange interview with pre-superstar Rick Remender.]
It's a coincidence. I was reading Punks: The Comic #3 around the same time actor Chris Pine was apologizing for the tepid reception of Jack Ryan film series reboot in which he starred, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (not the best title). It isn't Pine's fault. Maybe Jack Ryan movies should be based on actual Jack Ryan novels written by the late Tom Clancy and not on screenplays written by gilded studio hacks like David Koepp.
But I digress... It's just that The Hunt for Red October, a movie based on a Tom Clancy Jack Ryan novel, plays an integral part in Punks #3. This issue, although quite good, does not hit the highs reached by the first two issues, but #3 hints at Punks' seemingly endless possibilities for humor, satire, and farce. Fialkov and Chamberlain have a weapon by which they can eviscerate the current social-political, cultural, and pop culture landscapes of America (and maybe even the old landscapes).
I assume both creators want to “work in this town again,” so American comics, both as an industry and as a culture, are probably safe. That and the zealous protection of copyrights and trademarks may keep this dynamic duo from slaying comic book sacred cows. Still, the sky's the limit for Abe, Skull, Fist, and Dog, and I'm sure they'd take a crap on the sky, too.

Captain America created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby
As part of its “Avenger NOW!” initiative, Marvel Comics is debuting some new titles and relaunching others. All-New Captain America is a relaunch. Written by Rick Remender, drawn by Stuart Immonen (pencils) and Wade von Grawbadger (inks), colored by Marte Gracia (with Eduardo Navarro), and lettered by Joe Caramagna, this Captain America title launches superhero, Sam Wilson a.k.a. The Falcon, as the new-look Captain America.
The Falcon is an African-American superhero created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan that first appeared in Captain America #117 (cover dated: September 1969). In his new role, the Falcon gets Captain America's shield and a redesigned uniform, as well as a new version of his Falcon wings. Sam Wilson also gets a partner, Ian Zola, the son Arnim Zola. Ian is the new Nomad.
All-New Captain America #1 finds Captain America and Nomad, with Redwing (a highly-trained hunting falcon), infiltrating a Hydra base hidden beneath a mountain. The new Captain America wants to show that he can be the man, but visiting mercenary, Batroc, doesn't thing agree. Besides, Batroc isn't the only familiar face making a surprise appearance.
I have not read many comic books written by Rick Remender. This first issue of All-New Captain America makes me want to read more. This story features some typical superhero action, but it has a humorous streak, and all the major characters seem to be on equal footing. Also, the battle depicted here will not be a one-sided affair, and the winner(s) will have to earn it. The situation is in flux for the new Captain America and that piques my interest.
Before there was All-New Captain America, there was All-New X-Men, which was guided by the art team of Stuart Immonen, Wade von Grawbadger, and Marte Gracia. I loved the art in that flashy new, X-Men comic book, but I came to take it for granted. Seeing their work here, however, makes me appreciate this art team all over again. This is one pretty comic book, so I think I'll come back to All-New Captain America to see if this entire creative team can make something special of this new series and this new Captain America. I think they can.

The Red Supremacy: Chapter 1
About three years ago, I read the first two issues of Avengers vs. X-Men (#0 and #1), and I didn't find anything that made me want to keep reading the much-anticipated and much-talked about event “maxi-series.” So I don't know why I'm reading the new Avengers/X-Men crossover event miniseries, Avengers & X-Men: Axis. Maybe, I'm curious?
Avengers & X-Men: Axis #1 (The Red Supremacy: Chapter 1) opens with a brief recap/overview of what has happened since the shocking end of Avengers vs. X-Men, in which the X-Man, Cyclops, killed his mentor and founder of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier. The result was the branding of Cyclops as a criminal and also the founding of the Uncanny Avengers, a unity squad of Avengers and X-Men. Of course, a new team wouldn't make them better for long.
Fast forward: Magneto kills Captain America's arch-nemesis, the Red Skull, which leads to his resurrection as “The Red Onslaught.” Now, there is a wave of psychic energy and hate, initiated by Red Onslaught, because he possesses Prof. X's brain and psychic powers. This psychic wave, or onslaught, if you will, has the world in turmoil, so the Avengers and X-Men have to come together to stop Red Onslaught.
Wow. It has been an unknown number of years (but it is many) since I have read an issue of a comic book event series in which superheroes and super-villains engage in a slug fest. Part of me enjoys seeing so many of the superheroes that I've known most of my life together, even the new versions. I enjoyed the Scarlet Witch angle of this story, as well as the Scarlet Witch-Rogue subplot. I think this Red Onslaught character is ridiculous, however. I did not plan on reading any more of this, even while wondering why I was reading Avengers & X-Men: Axis #1 to begin with.
Then, I saw Sentinels at the end of the first issue, and then, I decided to read more. I think that is how these superhero crossover events work. The writers, artists, and editors throw so much into the event (something we can compare to a pot full of ingredients), and the readers are bound to find something to appeal to them.
So there you have it. I thought I was out, but they dragged me back in.
