I Reads You Review: SCOOBY-DOO, Where Are You? #99

INKS: Horacio Ottolini; Fabio Laguna
COLORS: Silvana Brys; Heroic Age
LETTERS: Saida Temofonte; Travis Lanham

Rated “E” for “Everyone”

“Muddier on the Disoriented Express”

I am continuing my journey through the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? comic book series. I renewed my subscription, and issue #99 is the first issue I received from that renewal.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #99 opens with “Muddier on the Disoriented Express” which is written by Sholly Fisch and drawn by Walter Carzon and Horacio Ottolini. Mystery Inc.: Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma receives free tickets for a luxury train trip through Europe. However, the gang is having a hard time enjoying the trip for two reasons.

First, the other passengers aboard this train are an unpleasant lot. There are two surly, “successful businessmen,” Mr. Rocco and Mr. Slugg. Next is a snob, “the Contessa,” and her belligerent assistant who accuses everyone of being paparazzi. Even the train's chef and conductor are acting kinda shady. Secondly, this luxury train is haunted by a ghost calling itself “the Spirit of Justice,” and it claims that it is after the “wicked” and the “villains” aboard the train so that it can dispense some justice.

The second story, “Over the Boardwalk,” is, as usual, a reprint and is written by Paul Kupperberg and drawn by Fabio Laguna. [This story was originally published in Scooby-Doo #155 (cover dated: June 2010).] Mystery Inc. is visiting Coney Island. Scooby and Shaggy are enjoying the rides and the food. Fred and Daphne want to sit on the beach. Velma plans a walking tour to discover the local history. However, Coney Island is suffering from a devilish infestation, and the gang may be forced to deal with it whether they want to or not.

Of course, “Muddier on the Disoriented Express” is a Scooby-Doo spin on Agatha Christie's classic mystery novel, Murder on the Orient Express. It has been adapted for film and television numerous times, and the novel has been the subject of parody and spoof countless times. Readers will find that “Muddier on the Disoriented Express” is true to Christie's novel, in a manner, when it comes to the resolution of the mystery of the “Spirit of Justice.” The story is well colored by Silvana Brys and also features Saida Temofonte's usual sharp lettering.

“Over the Boardwalk” also features nice coloring (by Heroic Age) and lettering (by Travis Lanham). I like the story, but I usually like Paul Kupperberg's Scooby-Doo stories. Also, the two artists for this issue, Walter Carzon and Fabio Laguna, are two of my favorite Scooby-Doo comic book artists. Overall, I enjoyed Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #99

See you next issue.

Review: SUPERMAN #1

SUPERMAN No. 1 (2018)
DC COMICS – @DCComics

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

STORY: Brian Michael Bendis
PENCILS: Ivan Reis
INKS: Joe Prado
COLORS: Alex Sinclair
LETTERS: Josh Reed
COVER: Ivan Reis and Joe Prado with Alex Sinclair
VARIANT COVERS: Adam Hughes; David Mack
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (September 2018)

Rated “T” for “Teen”

Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster

“The Unity Saga”

Superman the comic book series enters a new era with a new writer and a new #1 issue (the third in seven years).  Superman is the most famous DC Comics superhero character.  Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 (cover dated: June 1938).  Superman was first a baby named “Kal-El” from the doomed planet Krypton.  Brought to Earth on a rocket ship (or space craft), Baby Kal was adopted by Martha and Thomas Kent, who named him “Clark Kent.”

Clark would grow up to be the superhero, Superman, and his activities and adventures were first chronicled in Action Comics.  A year later, Superman would get his own eponymous title when the comic book entitled Superman #1 debuted.  Now, comes a new Superman series.  It is written by the new primary Superman comic book writer, Brian Michael Bendis.  It is drawn by artists Ivan Reis (pencils) and Joe Prado (inks); colored by Alex Sinclair; and lettered by Josh Reed.

Superman #1 (2018) finds The Man of Steel stopping an invasion of Earth by the “Dominators” dead in its tracks.  [The Dominators a.k.a. “Dominion” were first seen in Adventures Comics #361 (October 1967), but are probably best known for being the villains in the 1988-89 comic book miniseries and crossover event, Invasion!].  Then, it is time to build a new “Fortress of Solitude,” have two separate meetings with fellow Justice League teammates, save the day several times, and discover something shocking about our planet.

I really want to like Brian Michael Bendis' Superman comic books, and for the most part, I enjoyed his debut series, The Man of Steel, a six-issue miniseries.  It could never live up to my ridiculously high expectations, but I actually wanted more of The Man of Steel.  Well, Superman #1 starts the process of meeting my Bendis Superman needs and expectations.

Bendis fills this first issue with wonderful surprises and sub-plots.  Ivan Reis' pencil art and compositions are lushly illustrated, and have a sparkling quality thanks to Joe Prado's intricate and detailed inks.  Colorist supreme Alex Sinclair delivers hues that have an opulent quality.  Josh Reed does some heavy lifting finding the right spots in the art to place word balloons and boxes.  This is a very well put together graphics package

I get the feeling that Bendis is going to portray Superman/Clark Kent as having to confront, deal with, and manage all his persona and all aspects of his personal, private, secret, and super lives.  I really like Superman #1 (2018), and I think my ridiculously high expectations might be met.

Captain America created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby

“Winter in America” Part 1

Captain America is a Marvel Comics superhero created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.  Captain America was Steve Rogers, a frail young man who reached the peak of human perfection via the experimental “super soldier” serum.

He first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover dated:  March 1941), which was published by Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics.  After Captain America Comics was canceled in 1949, there was a revival of the series from 1953 to 1954.  Captain America fully returned to modern comic books in The Avengers #4 (cover dated: March 1964).

Steve Rogers/Captain America embarks on a new beginning again with a relaunch of his title series.  The new Captain America comic book series is written by Ta-Nehisi Coates; drawn by Leinil Francis Yu (pencils) and Gerry Alanguilan (inks); colored by Sunny Gho; and lettered by Joe Caramagna.  In the new series, Captain America faces an existential crises as he wrestles with how people view and perceive him in the wake of the Hydra Captain America impostor that briefly took over the world as an authoritarian dictator.

Captain America #1 opens in the Sayan Mountains of Russia months earlier.  There, something new is emerging from the ashes of Hydra.  In the present day, Captain America and the Winter Solider battle a small army of men who resemble Cap's old adversary, Nuke.  They are killing civilians in a mass shooting event in and around the National Mall in Washington D.C.  As Captain America battles to save lives and stop these killers, he will also have to face another harsh reality.  No one really trusts him anymore... even the people who should know him best.

I would not call Captain America #1 2018 a great comic book, but it is the best written Captain America comic book that I have read in ages.  Ta-Nehisi Coates cleverly uses the battle at the National Mall's aftermath to depict not so much Captain America in crisis, but the Sentinel of Liberty as man at odds with the people, places, and nation he has sworn to protect and to defend.  It makes for great reading, because we known this is the true Captain America, but the dramatic tension brought by the distrust of Cap from the other characters makes for some good reading.

Leinil Francis Yu has been a skilled graphical storyteller for over two decades, but his drawing style has taken an ugly turn the last several years – as far as I am concerned.  He is better here, and Sunny Gho's evocative colors strengthen how the narrative conveys its ideas and heightens the drama.  Letterer Joe Caramagna creates a steady sense of rhythm that paces the narrative flow for both the action scenes and for the character scenes that confront Captain America.

I think Ta-Nehisi Coates will make me a regular Captain America reader for the first time in ages.  I think this is the beginning of a good age for Captain America.

Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies created by B. Alex Thompson

“The Road to Salvation, Part 2 of 4”

Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies is a long-running comedy-horror, adventure, and zombie apocalypse comic book series.  It is the creation of B. Alex Thompson and is published by his company, Approbation Comics.  The series is set during a zombie invasion and follows the adventures of three members of the sorority, Epsilon Alpha Zeta Upsilon (EAZY):  ass-kickin’ Jamie Lynn Schaeffer, brainy and magic-wielding Paige Helena Patton, and sexy Brittany Ann Miller.

The current story line is “The Road to Salvation,” which finds the Chaos Campus trio in the middle of a squabble involving a human sanctuary, called “Salvation.”  They also deal with the fearsome “Neo Zombies” and with a Jamie-lookalike.  “The Road to Salvation” is written by B. Alex Thompson; and illustrated by Jose Henrique and Anita Zaramella; and lettered by Elisa M. Coletti.

Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies #26 opens as Paige and Brittany and Tyler (Paige's brother) and forces from Salvation East meet Jamie's lookalike from Salvation West, Aimee.  Pardon me; that's “Princess Aimee.”  Thanks to this spoiled princess, Jamie is about to learn more about her past... and her parentage.

Meanwhile, in Salvation West, Jamie makes a colorful discovery about one of her captors.  Now, it is time to hear from Princess Aimee's mother, Queen Raimee, the leader of Salvation West, about the origins of the schism of Salvation.  And it involves some mad scientist shiz-nit.

I have mentioned before that I believe that Chaos Campus has hit a stride since the series numbering arrived in the “20s.”  It is one of my favorite comic books, and I like watching everything that has happened so far come together to form a solid block of entertaining that is on par with any comedy slash humor titles published by Diamond Distributors' premiere publishers.

“The Road to Salvation” story line is a standout because it not only offers origin stories of its main cast, but it is also pulls back the curtain on the series' backstory.  This issue features solid graphics from the team of Jose Henrique Anita Zaramella, and Elisa M. Coletti.  As always, Thompson gives his readers an engaging story that has me ready for the rest of this story arc.

Review: YOUNG JUSTICE #1

YOUNG JUSTICE No. 1 (2019)
DC COMICS/Wonder Comics – @DCComics

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

STORY: Brian Michael Bendis
ART: Patrick Gleason
COLORS: Alejandro Sanchez
LETTERS: DC Lettering
EDITORS: Mike Cotton and Andy Khouri
COVER: Patrick Gleason and Alejandro Sanchez
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Amy Reeder; Derrick Chew; Yasmine Putri; Jorge Jimenez; Evan “Doc” Shaner; Patrick Gleason
40pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (March 2019)

Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”

“Seven Crises”

Young Justice is a DC Comics superhero team that consists of teenage heroes.  The first iteration of Young Justice appeared in the one-shot comic book, Young Justice: The Secret #1 (cover dated: June 1998), which lead to the first issue of an ongoing series (cover dated: September 1998).  The new year 2019 sees a new Young Justice ongoing series.

DC Comics and superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis have launched a young readers imprint, “Wonder Comics,” which will feature in-continuity stories.  The first Wonder Comics series is Young Justice.  It is written by Bendis; drawn by Patrick Gleason; colored by Alejandro Sanchez; and lettered by DC Lettering.

Young Justice #1 (“Seven Crises”) opens in Gemworld.  [You remember that place, right?  Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld?]  Gemworld apparently has suffered through seven “Crisis” events, and Earth is always the focal point.  So invade Earth, specifically Metropolis, and demand that Superman appear.

Jinny Hex, Robin/Tim Drake, (fake) Wonder Girl/Cassie Sandsmark, Impulse, and Teen Lantern fight an invasion that they don't understand.  Young Justice is back!

Young Justice #1 is not nearly as good as classic Brian Michael Bendis-written first issues he did for Marvel Comics (New Avengers, Ultimate Spider-Man, various Iron Man and Miles Morales comic books series).  No, make that Young Justice #1 is not anywhere in the same league as classic Bendis Marvel #1 issues.

Young Justice #1 is a fight comic featuring wall-to-wall action.  Patrick Gleason's art here is not his best, and his storytelling is similar to what readers will find in event comics – big action not big drama.  Colorist Alejandro Sanchez turns in professional work... that is not his best.  DC Lettering, whatever or whoever that is, at least hits high notes on the character logos.

I expect a lot of Bendis comic books, and I might read future issues of Young Justice.  Young Justice #1 is good, but not good enough to make me anxious for a second issue, the way I hankered for the second issues of classic Bendis Marvel titles.
