“Thunder in Her Veins”

Marvel Comics' version of Thor is, of course, based on the Norse mythological deity of the same name.  Thor first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 (cover dated: August 1962) and was created by editor-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller Jack Kirby.    Marvel's “The Mighty” Thor is a superhero and a member of superhero team, The Avengers.

Thor possesses the “enchanted hammer,” Mjolnir, and he is the Prince of Asgard, the one true God of Thunder – the Odinson... until now.  There is a “Goddess of Thunder,” and she possesses Mjolnir.  She is Dr. Jane Foster, Thor's lady-friend.  As part of the “All-New, All-Different Marvel,” the new Thor has her second ongoing comic book series, Mighty Thor.  It is written by Jason Aaron, drawn by Russell Dauterman, colored by Matthew Wilson, and lettered by Joe Sabino.

Mighty Thor #1 (“Thunder in Her Veins”) opens with Jane Foster receiving chemotherapy because of the cancer that is killing her mortal form.  As Thor, she is healthy, and the Goddess of Thunder will be needed because elves are falling from the sky.  Before the Congress of Worlds, the Light Elves of Alfheim declare that the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim and their sly king, Malekith, are waging war against them.

Although that is true, the Dark Elves deny it.  The tense and dangerous situation could be resolved by Odin, but the All-Father hides in his castle, refusing to engage.  Meanwhile Cul Borson is still seeking to take the new Thor prisoner, but an even darker conspiracy is gathering against her.

When I read the beginning of the first Jane Foster series, Thor #1, in late 2014, I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I thought the book's creative team had done a fantastic job of starting a new era of Thor.  Well, that same creative team is back for Mighty Thor, and the first issue of this series is simply a continuation of the previous series.

I called writer Jason Aaron's script for Thor #1 “a thing of wonders,” and he hasn't missed a beat moving into Mighty Thor.  He has given the saga of Thor and of Asgard a “Game of Thrones” vibe.  And why not?  Thor has always had the potential to be a tale of both medieval courtly intrigue and high-fantasy war and adventure, while being a superhero comic book.

I am still enthralled by Russell Dauterman's art.  At the beginning of the earlier series, I liked his art, but for Thor, it needed time to grow on me.  With the arrival of Mighty Thor, Dauterman has won me over; he has brought something fresh and vital to Thor, even almost a year-and-a-half later.  As I did before, I recommend that readers at least try the first issue of this new Mighty Thor.

“Incoming Fire Has The Right of Way”

Murphy's Fubar is a short comic book that contains the comics short story, “Incoming Fire Has The Right of Way.”  This comic is the work of Damon Pellican, a U.S. Army veteran and fledgling comic book creator.  “Incoming Fire Has The Right of Way” is written and drawn (pencils-inks) by Pellican and Tone Rodriguez (inks), and lettered by Angela Pellican, Damon's wife.

“Incoming Fire Has The Right of Way” comes to life at “Murphy's Fubar,” a bar that acts as an oasis for wayward souls, especially the souls of military veterans who have seen the darkest and bloodiest sides of war and of military combat.  “Murphy's Fubar” seems to be the last stop for lost souls, a place where they can find a way to resolve their physical and/or emotional wounds or die because of them.  The barkeep is Master Sgt. Murphy, whom Pellican describes as “a grizzly, battle-hardened vet.”  Mysterious and perhaps supernatural, Murphy may be connected to all of humanity's wars, from the first and oldest to the most recent conflicts.

“Incoming Fire Has The Right of Way” opens in 1998.  We meet a lost man living as low as a man could when a doorway appears before him.  His life literally leaking from him, he enters a bar where an equally grizzled bartender offers him a story.  Transported back thirty years to Vietnam, 1968, this desperate man will have to choose between the “hard road” or the “easy way out.”

I like the raw, unrefined nature of Damon Pellican's illustrations.  He is at the place where many young comic book artists find themselves, even the great ones, and that is how to grow by leaps and bounds.  A few years of intensive comic book drawing, and 1981 Matt Wagner becomes 1986 Matt Wagner (Mage) – almost two different artists.  Or Jim Lee:  from the end of his run on Alpha Flight (1987-88), through The Punisher War Journal (1989), he emerged on Uncanny X-Men (1990-91) and seemed like a totally different artist.

I see potential in Pellican as an artist, and that shows in this story through the inking of Tone Rodriguez, a longtime comic book artist.  I think the combination of the two makes the art for “Incoming Fire Has The Right of Way” look like Michael Golden's art on Marvel Comics' war comic book series, The 'Nam (issues #1-11, 13).  The cover art also is pretty dynamic.

Drawing skills aside, Pellican does some good graphical storytelling in “Incoming Fire Has The Right of Way.”  This is a powerful, brief, little tale that seems longer in terms of page length and bigger in terms of scope.  Pellican gets more out of eight pages than some of Marvel and DC Comics titles get out of 20 or 30 pages.

So I'm shocked.  I bought this first installment of Murphy's Fubar only to support a local comic book creator.  Frankly, I didn't expect much; instead, I found something I really liked.  With the best creators of American war comics mostly long gone, I look forward to another visit to Murphy's Fubar.

“Big Flerken Deal”

Captain Marvel is a Marvel Comics superhero.  The original Captain Marvel, also known as “Captain Mar-Vell,” was the Kree military officer, Mar-Vell, and the character first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 (cover date: December 1967).  The seventh character to have the title of Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers, an officer in the United States Air Force.  Formerly known as Ms. Marvel, Danvers first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (cover date: March 1968) and first appeared as the modern-day Captain Marvel in Avenging Spider-Man #9 (cover dated: July 2012.)

Marvel Action is a new line of comic books produced by IDW Publishing under license from Marvel Comics.  The titles in this line will feature Marvel Comics characters in comic books aimed at “middle grade readers” and “younger readers.”  The fourth new release in this line is Marvel Action: Captain Marvel.  It is written by Sam Maggs; drawn by Sweeney Boo; colored by Brittany Peer; and lettered by Christa Miesner.

Marvel Action: Captain Marvel #1 (“Big Flerken Deal”) opens with Carol Danvers enjoying a rare, quiet evening at home with her BFF and roommate Jessica Drew, who is also the superhero, Spider-Woman.  This peaceful night of movie-watching, however, takes a bad turn when a breaking news alert interrupts the movie.  It seems that a swarm of cats have invaded Manhattan Island and are targeting it bodegas.

Who are these angry felines?  Or rather, what are these angry felines?  They are “Flerkens,” aliens that look like cats, and each one has a pocket-dimension and giant tentacles in its mouth.  Handling these bad kitties should be an easy job for Captain Marvel... shouldn't it?  [Carol Danver's pet cat/Flerken, “Chewbacca,” appears in this comic book, and also in this year's Captain Marvel film, where it was renamed “Goose.]

In Marvel Studios global box office hit movie, Captain Marvel, there is a cat that steals practically every scene in which it appears.  That cat is Flerken.  Unfortunately, a comic book full of Flerkens cannot make Marvel Action: Captain Marvel #1 as fun as the movie from earlier this year.

The art by Sweeney Boo looks like it was lifted from a daytime TV animated series.  Brittany Peer's coloring is nice, and the lettering by Christa Miesner is efficient in convey the story beats and tones.  Sam Maggs simply doesn't deliver a story or script that falls flat.  There is some potential, but not much.  I would be surprised if Marvel Action: Captain Marvel turns into something really fun to read.

However, those looking for a Captain Marvel young readers comic book at least have one in Marvel Action: Captain Marvel #1.
