Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies created by B. Alex Thompson

“Restitution”

Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies is the long-running zombie apocalypse comic book series from Approbation Comics.  Mixing in elements of comedy, horror, adventure, and magic, it is the creation of B. Alex Thompson.  The series is set during a zombie invasion and follows the adventures of three members of the sorority, Epsilon Alpha Zeta Upsilon (EAZY):  ass-kickin’ Jamie Lynn Schaeffer, brainy and magic-wielding Paige Helena Patton, and sexy goddess-type Brittany Ann Miller.

The “Higher Learning” story arc gives way to a new story, “Restitution.”  It is written by Thompson; drawn by Ricardo Mendez; colored by Alivon Ortiz; and lettered by Krugos.

Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies #37 ("Restitution") opens in the wake of the battle to stop Paige's father, Parker Patton, who had become the villain, “Tech Locke.”  As the story begins, Paige, Jamie, and Damien are attempting to kill off the remaining horde of Neo-Zombies in order to protect a nearby survivors' colony.  Suddenly, Tess Raven, Paige's sister (of sorts), joins them in battle, but Paige and Damien would rather take her prisoner.

Paige is willing to hear what Tess has to say, but they are suddenly separated from the other two.  Paige and Tess also discover that they are suffering from drained powers.  The cause may be the sudden appearance of some of Paige's friends and allies:  Brittany, Sanee, Darren Wormsor, Roger, Oliver, Mikhail.  However, this Brittany seems strange.  Roger is supposed to be dead!  And Sanee is in full attack mode.  Meet the alternate friends from another world, the “Paige Hunters.”

In order to escape them, Tess will finally have to tell her origin story.  Now, she is going to reveal her true connection to Paige.

THE LOWDOWN:  B. Alex Thompson has recently presented some big story lines in the Chaos Campus narrative, such as “The Road to Salvation” and “Higher Learning.”  It is clear that Thompson is building towards something big as he heads to the end of this series.

Chaos Campus #37 directly ties into the trippy Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies: Extra Credit #10, with its alternate take on the beginnings of Chaos Campus.  There is also a connection to the early issue, Chaos Campus #7.  Here, Thompson offers a wonderful and mind-bending trip through multiple universes, alternate worlds, and mirror images.  I am loathe to spoil it, but Chaos Campus #37 is one of the series' best issues.

Artist Ricardo Mendez delivers sterling storytelling as he depicts a head-spinning number of dimensional jumps.  Mendez seems to be the ideal artist to graphically chronicle Thompson's current Chaos Campus status quo, and he continues to show that he can do the big event stories.

Colorist Alivon Ortiz makes the art crackle in living color, and Krugos' lettering continues the steady beat of this series, pounding out fonts like surround sound.  So where does Thompson go from here?  Let's keeping following, dear readers, because it is worth discovering.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of zombies and of horror-comedies will want to try Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies.

“Born to Kill”

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters is a Marvel Comics Star Wars publishing event that is comprised of 34 individual comic books, published from May to October 2021.  The series invents a series of events that occur between the time bounty hunter, Boba Fett, collects Han Solo frozen in carbonite in 1980s The Empire Strikes Back (Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back) and Fett's appearance in 1983's Return of the Jedi (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi).

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters – IG-88 #1 is the fourth of four “War of the Bounty Hunters” one-shot tie-ins that focus on the most notorious hunters and scoundrels of the Star Wars criminal underworld.  This comic book is written by Rodney Barnes; drawn by Guiu Vilanova; colored by Antonio Fabela; and lettered by Ariana Maher.

As Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters – IG-88 #1 (“Born to Kill”) opens, the droid, IG-88, who calls himself “the greatest bounty hunter in the galaxy,” lies in the pieces.  [The reasons for this are shown in Darth Vader (2020) #17-18.]  Enter the cyborg, RB-919, who is a master at recommissioning droids.  He has been hired by Deva Lompop, the bounty hunter and member of the galactic criminal syndicate, Crimson Dawn, to restore IG-88.

Once IG-88 is back online he returns to being an advanced droid designed for death, destruction, and mayhem, flawless in design and possessing unparalleled weapons systems.  Lompop has a mission for the revived bounty hunter – find Boba Fett and steal Han Solo (frozen in carbonite) from him.  Can IG-88 find a strategy to overcome his old foe?  And what motivates him to come back from destruction time and again?

THE LOWDOWN:  Until I read Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters - IG-88 #1, I had not read a single issue of “War of the Bounty Hunters,” although I had initially planned to do so.  I am a fan of writer Rodney Barnes, so when I found out (via Twitter) that he'd written this tie-in comic book, I purchased a digital copy via comiXology.

Barnes doesn't disappoint.  I wondered if anyone could write a single-issue story that ties into “War of the Bounty Hunters” and that either illuminates IG-88's character or offers something new.  Barnes offers a credible tie-in and also a story that presents IG-88 as an intriguing character outside the main story.  Honestly, he seems more humanoid than droid, and he is an attractive character because he is both clever and homicidal.

I hugely enjoyed the art by Guiu Vilanova, which reminds me of 1990s Matt Wagner.  While stylish, Vilanova's art here conveys the edgy, violent nature of Barnes' story, while establishing a gritty sci-fi setting that recalls the original Star Wars film's Wild West vibes.  Antonio Fabela's colors light the story as if to bring together the sensibilities of Blade Runner and Star Wars.  Ariana Maher's lettering delineates this story's shifts and twists in a seamless fashion.

I will be a greedy fanboy and say that I wish there was more Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters - IG-88 #1.  I think Rodney Barnes and Guiu Vilanova could at least offer an enticing IG-88 miniseries.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Star Wars comic books will want Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters - IG-88 #1.

#IReadsYou Review: HOME SICK PILOTS #5

HOME SICK PILOTS #5
IMAGE COMICS

STORY: Dan Watters
ART: Caspar Wijngaard
COLORS: Caspar Wijngaard
LETTERS: Aditya Bidikar
DESIGN: Tom Muller
COVER: Caspar Wijngaard
VARIANT COVER ARTIST: Tradd Moore
28pp, Colors, 3.99 U.S. (April 2021)

Rated “M/Mature”

Home Sick Pilots created by Dan Watters and Caspar Wijngaard

Home Sick Pilots is a comic book series created by writer Dan Watters and artist Caspar Wijngaard, the creative team of the comic book, Limbo.  Home Sick Pilots focuses on a group of teens and a haunted house with an evil mind of its own.  Letterer Aditya Bidikar and designer Tom Muller complete the series' creative team.

Home Sick Pilots opens in Santa Manos, California, July 18, 1994.  A haunted house known as “the Old James House” walks across California, and inside is Ami, the lead singer of the high school punk band, “Home Sick Pilots.”  Ami has been missing for weeks, so how did she get in the Old James House?  It has ghosts, and Ami has to find them.  But what is the entire story behind Ami, the ghosts, and that house?

As Home Sick Pilots #5 opens, the Old James House turns on Ami, and now, she has to find a way to make a deal with them – all of the ghosts that haunt the hallways.  Elsewhere, Rip discovers that Meg is not dead, and she has some kind of connection to Ami.  It all leads to a Godzilla vs. Kong-type fistfight between a house and monster!

THE LOWDOWN:  At some point in the run-up to the debut of Home Sick Pilots, the series was described as being a blend of author Shirley Jackson's novel, The Haunting of Hill House (1959); the comic book series, Paper Girls, and the Power Rangers franchise.  Home Sick Pilots #5 brings this new series' first story arc, “Teenage Haunts,” to an end.

This fifth issue definitely shows the Power Rangers side of the concept, but influences aside, Home Sick Pilots, is like no comic book I have ever read.  I doubt most American comic book fans have seen anything like it.  If Watters and Wijngaard know of a comic like their amazing creation, I wish they would share its title with us.

Seriously, the crazy thing about Home Sick Pilots is that every issue seems like something brand new, as if it is connected to a main narrative, but also has its own fresh story thing happening.  Dan Watters' script for issue #5 keeps that mysterious, weird, exciting and scary vibe, but gives us an epic, screwy “kaiju” battle and a taste of the good things to come in this series.  Caspar Wijngaard's art and colors create a crazy world of houses that transform and walk and also, everyday structures that merge to form the ultimate mecha-styled monsters.

Aditya Bidikar's lettering is rhythmic in a way that conveys the odd, but alluring nature of this series.  Designer Tom Muller gives the series a look that recalls rock music poster art and concert show flier design to Home Sick Pilots.  Watters and Wijngaard and Bidikar and Muller jam Home Sick's Pilots' first show to an end with a crescendo.  I am highly recommending readers get the upcoming trade collection, Home Sick Pilots Vol. 1: Teenage Haunts, because I'm already anticipating the sixth issue and a new story arc.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of offbeat and imaginative supernatural comic books will want to fly with the Home Sick Pilots.
