Review: FARLAINE THE GOBLIN Book 7: "The Final Land"

FARLAINE THE GOBLIN No. 7
STUDIO FARLAINE – @TreeGoblin

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

CARTOONIST: Pug Grumble
COVER: Pug Grumble with Jean-Francois Beaulieu
VARIANT COVER: David Petersen
ISBN:  978-0-9890058-7-6; paperback (September 2018)
68pp, B&W; $5.00 U.S.

All-Ages

Book 7: “The Final Land”

Farlaine the Goblin is a series of fantasy graphic novels published by Studio Farlaine and written and drawn by the cartoonist who goes by the nom de plume, “Pug Grumble” (but who was previously credited as “Anonymous”).  Mr. Grumble has been providing me with PDF review copies of the recent Farlaine editions.

Each Farlaine comic book/graphic novel is published as a paperback (landscape dimensions 11.8” x 7.75”).  The story focuses on Farlaine the Goblin, a tree goblin and a shaman from the forest of Fin-Din.  He has spent years wandering the many “Oddlands of Wug” in search of a forest that he can call his own.  Farlaine has two companions.  The first is Ehrenwort, a tree he carries in a sack on his back; Farlaine also talks to Ehrenwort, whom he describes as his “Verdan.”  The second companion is a “Tink” whom Farlaine met in an earlier adventure in the “Tinklands.”  A rotund, mechanical fellow (think Star Wars' BB-8 with two wheels), he has been named Drowsy by Farlaine.

Farlaine the Goblin: Book 7, The Final Land opens to find Farlaine, Ehrenwort, and Drowsy leaving The Winglands, or at least trying to leave.  And the bully dragon our heroes met in The Vaultlands (Book 5) is still vexing them.  To complicate matters, fate takes the gang back to The Tinklands, the home of Drowsy!

Now, The Tinklands, lacking “Tinks,” is up for grabs.  Fill it up with enough of something, and that is what that land becomes.  For instance, The Tinklands could become a peg-leg land!  For Farlaine, this could also become the end of his journey.  He is running out of lands, and Ehrenwort may be dying.  To save her, Farlaine and Drowsy will have to use all of their imagination, but most of all, they will need to call forth what is good and true within them.

Pug Grumble gave me copies of Farlaine the Goblin, Trade Paperback, Volume 1, which collects the first three graphic novels in the series, and also Book 4 back in 2015.  I read them and fell in love with Farlaine the Goblin.  I have been a fervent supporter of Grumble's efforts, and I have been doing my part to spread the good word about a certain goblin's good work.

Now, we come to the release of the final book, Farlaine the Goblin: Book 7, The Final Land.  It is fitting that Book 7's variant cover edition features cover art by David Petersen, whose Mouse Guard fantasy comic book series, became a huge hit after Petersen originally self-published the first issue.  Farlaine is like Mouse Guard in that both are great fantasy comics not published by biggest North America's biggest comic book publishers.  Yet both Grumble and Petersen's talent and work shine, and their comics are as good as anything published by a major comic book publisher.

When I read Farlaine, I feel as if I have entered a venerable library, and after perusing the shelves, I have found a leather bound volume.  Upon opening it, I discover something old, but timeless.  Farlaine the Goblin is a new work, but it brims with old magic, as if it belongs right alongside The Hobbit and The Wind in the Willows.  I feel that way whenever I reread the first issue of Neil Gaiman's beloved fantasy comic book series, The Sandman.  While Farlaine the Goblin is new and unknown to so many readers, readers that will discover it in the future will discover a classic fantasy tale infused with the sense of magic that classic fantasy must have.

Farlaine the Goblin: Book 7, The Final Land is a great final volume.  Its themes of forgiveness, redemption, friendship, reinvention, and discovery make this story sparkle with possibilities.  That makes Farlaine seem as if his story is ending with him being a goblin in full.  Farlaine the Goblin: Book 7, The Final Land is not about finality.  Farlaine will go on “happily ever after” even if his creator never engages him again.  He will always be there waiting for new readers to enter a library or a bookstore and to discover his journey.

Review: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES/USAGI YOJIMBO

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES/USAGI YOJIMBO (ONE-SHOT)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird; Usagi Yojimbo created by Stan Sakai

“Namazu of The Big Fish Story”

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (also known as TMNT and Ninja Turtles or sometimes as “the Turtles”) are a media empire that began with four fictional characters created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.  The comic book, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (cover dated: May 1984), introduced four teenage anthropomorphic turtles (meaning they walk and talk like humans).

Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael were adopted by an anthropomorphic rat, Master Splinter, who was their sensei and who trained them in the art of ninjutsu.  The Turtles live in the sewers of New York City and battle every bad guy, from petty criminals and overlord-mastermind types to alien invaders and mutated creatures.

Usagi Yojimbo, which means “rabbit bodyguard,” is an anthropomorphic rabbit ronin who is sometimes hired as a bodyguard.  His adventures take place in Edo-era Japan (specifically the 17th century).  Created by Stan Sakai, Usagi first appeared in the small press comic book, Albedo Anthropomorphics #2.  He is the star of a long-running comic book series, Usagi Yojimbo, which is currently published by Dark Horse Comics, but was previously published by Fantagraphics Books (1987) and Mirage Publishing (1993).

TMNT and Usagi Yojimbo team up (not for the first time) in the new full-color comic book, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo.  This recently published one-shot is written, drawn and lettered by Stan Sakai and is colored by Tom Luth.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo (“Namazu of The Big Fish Story”) opens with Usagi dispatching a group of bandits that have been infesting a section of a road used by pilgrims.  A group of people on a pilgrimage thank Usagi for getting rid of the bandits, but they also inform Usagi that “the Old One” is expecting a visit from him.

The old one is Kakera-sensei, who wants Usagi to be his bodyguard as he travels to Tashima Shrine to deliver a special object.  One bodyguard will not be enough, so Kakera summons Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!  However, these turtles are not quite like the ones Usagi remembers, and their opponent, the evil Jei, is the obstacle in their big fish adventure called Namazu.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo is one of the best comic books I have read this year.  I have even put it on my my short list of best comic books of 2017.  Why?  First, it is really a good comic book.  The fact is that Stan Sakai is a master cartoonist and superior comic book creator.  I don't read Usagi Yojimbo that often (which is a shame on my part), but every time I have read it I have marveled at Sakai's imagination and inventive storytelling and, of course, his beautiful artwork.

I think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo's format plays a big part as to why I like it so much.  This comic book is a one-shot.  It is like a magical item that shows up once, delivers some magical storytelling, and then is magically spirited away.  It is also a comic book that is appropriate and accessible to anyone who can read comic books, regardless of age.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo is an example of a perfect (or near-perfect) comic book.  It features venerable, beloved comic book characters, and it is the creation of two master comic book creators, Stan Sakai and Tom Luth.

Book Review: WIND IN THE WILLOWS Illustrated by David Petersen

THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS
IDW PUBLISHING – @IDWPublishing

AUTHOR: Kenneth Grahame
ILLUSTRATOR: David Petersen
COVER: David Petersen
ISBN: 978-1-63140-343-9; hardcover, 8” x 10” (December 2016)
192pp, Color, $24.99 U.S.

The Wind in the Willows is a children's novel by Kenneth Grahame.  It was first published in 1908 and is one of the most beloved novels in Great Britain, according to various surveys.  The novel has been adapted for the stage, film, radio, and television numerous times.

The Wind in the Willows was originally published as a plain text book without illustrations.  However, illustrated editions of the book began to appear less than a decade after it was first published, including editions featuring illustrations by Paul Branson (1913), E.H. Shepard (1931) and by Arthur Rackham (1940), among others.

The latest illustrated edition of The Wind in the Willows is published by IDW Publishing.  The illustrator is David Petersen, the award-winning creator of the comic book series, Mouse Guard.  Petersen reportedly worked on this project for over three years, and the book contains over 60 of his illustrations, including 20 full-color plates.

I read part of this novel a long, long time ago, and what I remember from it I probably got from the Walt Disney film, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.  Half of this 1949 animated film was an adaption of The Wind in the Willows.  The other half of the film was based on the unrelated Washington Irving short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” (first published in 1820).

The Wind of the Willows focuses on four anthropomorphic animals that live in a pastoral version of Edwardian England.  They are Badger, Mole, Rat, and Toad of Toad Hall.  Theirs is an entrancing, lyrical world of gurgling rivers and whispering reeds where the friends can enjoy the simplest pleasures and natural wonders that life offers.  Their adventurers will test the miracle of loyalty and friendship in a story that has likely set the standard for other animal-themed novels.

It is clear that David Petersen's illustrative work for The Wind in the Willows is a labor of love.  Heck, it is obvious as soon as you crack this book open and see Petersen's spot illustrations of Toad and Rat.  The gorgeous color plates of Mole and Rat's boating excursion make me want to stare at them all day.  The first look at “Toad Hall” as a black and white illustration is quite a treat.  The color plate of Rat and Mole (Chapter Three “The Wild Wood”) would sell someone on buying this book.

As strong as the illustrations are to start this book, the ones that illustrate the last chapters of the book don't let up.  Petersen offers some powerful art to conclude The Wind in the Willows, and that wraparound color illustration that is this book's front and back cover will wrap around your reading and buying lists.

I had not heard about this project until I saw it in a Diamond Distributors list.  I was shocked when IDW sent me a copy-for-review.  I was like, “Damn, I wish all the books I got from comic book publishers were as fine as this here The Wind in the Willows.”

There are three target audiences for IDW's new, illustrated edition of The Wind in the Willows.  They are fans of writer-artist David Petersen's Mouse Guard; fans of The Wind in the Willows; and collectors of IDW's spectacular line of art books, illustrated publications, and archival editions.

A+
