Usagi Yojimbo created by Stan Sakai

“Bunraku” Part One

Usagi Yojimbo, which means “rabbit bodyguard,” is an anthropomorphic rabbit ronin who is sometimes hired as a bodyguard.  His adventures take place in Edo-era Japan (specifically the 17th century).  Created by Stan Sakai, Miyamoto Usagi first appeared in the small press comic book, Albedo Anthropomorphics #2.  He is the star of a long-running comic book series, Usagi Yojimbo, which has previously been published by Fantagraphics Books (1987-1993), by Mirage Publishing (1993-1995), and by Dark Horse Comics (1996-2018).

Now, Usagi Yojimbo has a new publisher, IDW Publishing.  This 2019 iteration of the venerable creator-owned comic book title is also the first ongoing Usagi Yojimbo comic book series to be published in full-color.  Once again the series is written, drawn, and lettered by creator Stan Sakai, and is colored by Tom Luth.

Usagi Yojimbo #1 opens with Sasuke, the fox who is a demon hunter, swordsman, and archer.  He is in the middle of a battle against “the demons of Mount Funai.”  Then, Lord Shoki the Demon Queller (the ghost who is also Sasuke's mentor) appears and sends Sasuke to the town of Kuroyama Mura.  Meanwhile, Usagi (“Usagi Yojimbo”) is already in town and is enjoying a “Bunraku” (a classical form of Japanese puppet theater), unaware of how close he is to the evil that Sasuke seeks.

Every single time I have read a Usagi Yojimbo comic book or story, I have enjoyed it – sometimes immensely.  Yet I cannot explain why I have read Usagi Yojimbo so little over the past three decades.  So I thought that this series relaunch at IDW was the perfect time to reengage this beloved samurai rabbit.  So how is the new comic book?

It's good, of course.  I am quite intrigued by this opening chapter in what will be an introductory three-issue arc, apparently before a longer story arc begins.  I don't think I'm telling people who have previously read Usagi Yojimbo something they don't already know.  Stan Sakai is an accomplished comic book creator, artist, and illustrator, and his comic books have always shown that.  Tom Luth, himself and accomplished comic book illustrator and colorist, also does good work here, of course.

What I can say is that readers unfamiliar with Usagi Yojimbo will find, in this new series, high-quality and delightful comic book storytelling.  Usagi Yojimbo often has the timeless quality that classic fantasy literature has.  If you are only interested in superhero comic books, dear reader, you may find that Stan Sakai and his samurai rabbit can still capture your imagination.

Conan the Barbarian based on the “Conan” character created by Robert E. Howard

“The Cult of Koga Thun” Part One: “Shipwrecked”

Conan the Cimmerian is a fictional “sword and sorcery” hero created by Robert E. Howard (REH).  Conan first appeared in the pulp fiction magazine, Weird Tales (1932).  Conan lived in Howard's fictional “Hyborian Age” and was a mercenary, outlaw, pirate, thief, warrior, and eventually a king, but because of his tribal origins, some characters that encountered him thought of Conan as a barbarian.

Beginning in 1970 and for three decades, Marvel Comics brought Conan to the world of American comic books with the series, Conan the Barbarian.  Marvel is publishing Conan comic books again and recently began a revival of its black and white Savage Sword of Conan comic magazine as a full-color standard-sized comic book.  Savage Sword of Conan (2019) is written by Gerry Duggan; drawn by Ron Garney; colored by Richard Isanove; and lettered by VC's Travis Lanham.

Savage Sword of Conan #1 (“Shipwrecked”) finds Conan cast adrift on the seas of fate.  Starving, half-drowned, half-dead, and hallucinating, Conan (who is about 20 or so years of age) is picked out of the ocean by the slave ship, “Ouroboros.”  He finds an ally (that he doesn't really need or want) in a fellow slave, Suty.  Together, they will discover that there is more to the captain of the Ouroboros and more to the treasure chest in his cabin than they suspect.

I enjoyed the return of Conan the Barbarian to Marvel Comics, and while that comic book has been good, even very good at times, it has not been great.  Savage Sword of Conan's return to Marvel Comics suggests that Savage Sword of Conan could be THE great Marvel Conan comic book (Era #2).  When I first read the original old, black and white magazine Savage Sword of Conan when I was a teenager, I found it to be superior to the Conan the Barbarian title of that time.

In fact, “Shipwrecked,” the opening chapter of this first story arc, reminds me of the stories I read in the original Savage Sword of Conan.  “Shipwrecked” is probably the best Gerry Duggan story I have read to date.  Duggan offers a violent tale that is as bat-shit crazy as Conan creator, Robert E. Howard's original Conan prose fiction, or it is at least as crazy as Roy Thomas' adaptations of Howard's stories for Conan comic books back in 1970s.  Dear readers, obviously you can tell that I had a blast reading this.

The power and aggression in this story is most evident in artist Ron Garney's illustrations and graphical storytelling.  The storytelling is brawny, and Garney deftly captures the sudden switches in Conan's temper and temperament.  Richard Isanove's shimmering colors emphasize, even heighten the intensity rather that merely color over the art.  Travis Lanham's matter-of-fact lettering seems to pound out the story to the reader, a relentless rhythm, page after page.

Savage Sword of Conan #1 is a success.  I will come back for more because this first issue reminds me of the stories that made me a fan of Conan comic books back in the way back.  I highly recommend this to Conan fans.

Review: MARVEL ACTION: SPIDER-MAN #1

Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee; Miles Morales created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli

Marvel Action is a new line of comic books produced by IDW Publishing under license from Marvel Comics.  The titles in this line will feature Marvel Comics characters in comic books aimed at “middle grade readers” and “younger readers.”

The first release in this new line features Marvel Comics' most famous character, Spider-Man, and is entitled Marvel Action: Spider-Man.  It written by Delilah S. Dawson; drawn by Fico Ossio; colored by Ronda Pattison; and lettered by Shawn Lee.  The series focuses on a 16-year-old Peter Parker and his astonishing new friends – Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy.

Marvel Action: Spider-Man #1 finds Spider-Man on night patrol when he encounters a citizen being threatened by what seems to be a really large mutated rat.  The next day, in a Queens, New York City apartment, Peter Parker faces an equally daunting challenge.  Today, he begins his internship at the newspaper, “The Daily Bugle.”  The legendary Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man is sponsoring the internship, and the intern who does the best job gets to conduct a rare interview of Stark.

However, Peter Parker's Spider-Man troubles are not over.  More monster-mutant rat-dog creatures are popping up throughout the city.  Peter springs into action as Spider-Man, but he is shocked to discover that his fellow interns, Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, aren't afraid of no mutants.  One of them even shows some surprising physical gifts.

Writer Delilah S. Dawson composes an “Amazing” script that captures the spirit of Spider-Man and is filled with something no longer found in most comic books aimed at older readers – a sense of mystery and wonder.  Artist Fico Ossio delivers some “Spectacular” art and graphical storytelling that recalls Mark Bagley's delightful work in the early issues of Ultimate Spider-Man.

Ronda Pattison's “Friendly Neighborhood” colors bring the world of Peter Parker/Spider Man to life and makes Ossio's art pop off the page.  Shawn Lee's “Web of” lettering completes this exciting graphics package to make this comic book a kind of storytelling eye candy.

Marvel Action: Spider-Man #1 is the start of something good.  It is for new and young readers, but longtime Spider-Man fans can find a lot to like here... if they are open to it.  I can't wait for the second issue.
