Batman created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger
Introduction by Steve Englehart
Steve Englehart is an American comic book writer known for his influential and prominent work during the 1970s. He had memorable runs writing The Avengers from #105 -#152 (1972 to 1976) and Doctor Strange (Vol. 2) #1 to 18 (except #3). He created such comics characters as “Shang-Chi, Master of Kung-Fu,” “Nomad,” “Star Lord,” and “Mantis.”
Marshall Rogers (1950 to 2007) was an American comic book artist known for his work for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Eclipse Comics. He produced memorable work like Harlan Ellison's graphic novel, Demon with a Glass Hand (DC Comics, 1986); an early 1980s run on Doctor Strange and a late 1980s run on The Silver Surfer, both for Marvel.
In November 1999, DC Comics published the trade paperback, Batman: Strange Apparitions. It collected Englehart and Rogers' most acclaimed and most influential work, which was their collaboration on a six-issue run of Batman stories for Detective Comics in the 1970s. From issue #471 to issue #476 (August 1977 to March-April 1978), Englehart and Rogers produced some of the most popular Batman stories of all time, although they each produced two stories for Detective Comics with other collaborators.
Englehart wrote a Batman two-part story for Detective Comics #469 and #470, which were drawn by legendary comic book artist, Walter Simonson. Rogers drew a two-art Batman story for issues #478 and #479, which were written by the late great comic book writer, Len Wein. However, their work from #471 to #476 is what marks Englehart and Rogers as one of the greatest Batman creative teams of all time. Although their work covers no more than six issues and is comprised of about only 102 pages, they are six memorable issues and 102 glorious pages.
DC Comics first reprinted Detective Comics #469 to #476 and #478 to #479 in the five-issue comic book miniseries, Shadow of the Batman (December 1985 to April 1986). Shadow of the Batman #1 reprints the Englehart and Simonson issues, and Shadow of the Batman #5 reprints the Wein and Rogers stories. Shadow of the Batman #2 to #4 reprints the Englehart-Rogers run. Rogers also drew double-sided covers for each issue of Shadow of the Batman, and each issue also includes a comics short story drawn by Rogers that appeared in one of DC Comics' 1970s comic book anthology series. Batman: Strange Apparitions reprints Detective Comics #469 to #476 and #478 to #479, without the Rogers short stories.
Englehart and artist Walt Simonson open Strange Apparitions with a two-part story from Detective Comics #469 (“...By Death's Eerie Light!”) and #470 (“The Master Plan of Dr. Phosphorus”). The radioactive villain, “Dr. Phosphorus,” is attempting to hold Gotham City hostage, and Batman is having a difficult time with the villain. Phosphorus has the strength to go toe-to-toe with Batman, and his radioactive touch can burn through Batman's uniform and leave serious burn on the Dark Knight's body. Phosphorus is also part of a conspiracy that reaches into city hall. The ringleader of this conspiracy is Boss Rupert Thorne, city council chairman and crime boss. Englehart also introduces a memorable love interest for Bruce Wayne, Silver St. Cloud, a socialite and eventually, an event planner who comes to realize that Wayne is Batman.
That leads into the first two Steve Englehart-Marshall Rogers issues, Detective Comics #471 (“The Dead Yet Live) and #472 (“I Am the Batman”). As Bruce Wayne, Batman checks into Graytowers Clinic, where the renowned Dr. Todhunter has a reputation for helping wealthy and powerful men recover physically and mentally. Batman is hoping to recover from the grave wounds he sustained battling Dr. Phosphorus. However, Dr. Todhunter is in actuality an old Batman villain, Hugo Strange. Strange discovers that Bruce Wayne is Batman and incapacitates Wayne so that he can assume the identity of Batman. Another plot line involves Boss Thorne putting out a contract on Batman's life, which draws the attention of some colorful and familiar Batman enemies. In “I Am the Batman,” Robin returns to Gotham City to re-team with Batman.
Batman takes on The Penguin in Detective Comics #473 (“The Malay Penguin”) and the assassin “Deadshot” in issue #474 (The Deadshot Ricochet”). Early in the latter story, Robin ends his temporary reunion with Batman when he is summoned by the Teen Titans.
Englehart and Rogers most famous story in their run occurred in the two-part Detective Comics #475 (“The Laughing Fish”) and #476 (“Sign of the Joker”). This story features an unambiguously homicidal Joker, whose murderous actions are wholly illogical and consistently capricious. In this mini-story arc, The Joker uses a chemical to disfigure fish in the ocean, giving them a “rictus grin” (similar to his own ghastly grin). The Joker brazenly expects to be granted a federal trademark on these grinning fish. The local government bureaucrats try to explain to the Joker that they cannot help him even if they wanted. Obtaining such a claim on a natural resource (like the fish) is legally impossible. So The Joker starts killing these men in the most gruesome way, and Batman begins a desperate and seemingly failing battle to stop the Joker. Issue #476 is Englehart's final issue.
Marshall Rogers ends his tenure on Detective Comics with a two-part tale written by Len Wein. The story appears in Detective Comics #478 (“The Coming of... Clayface III!”) and #479 (“If a Man Be Made of Clay...!”) and introduces the third iteration of the classic Batman villain, Clayface.
During his short, but essential run on Detective Comics, Steve Englehart returns Batman to his pulp fiction roots, making him a relentless force for justice. Marshall Rogers draws Batman as brooding, fearsome, wraith-like, and (indeed) bat-like. Batman moves about the page in a way that recalls what may be the character's chief inspiration, the pulp hero and vigilante, Walter Gibson's The Shadow.
The Joker also experiences a return to his roots. Englehart and Rogers present an insane, matter-of-fact, and homicidal Joker, who has a creepy, unsettling grin dominating his face. This recalls the character originally presented by writer Bill Finger and artists Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. As a visual reference for the way Rogers draws The Joker, readers need only take a look at three covers drawn by Jerry Robinson that feature The Joker: Detective Comics #69 (Nov. 1942) and #71 (Jan. 1943), and also Batman #37 (Oct.-Nov 1946).
Steve Englehart now refers to his 1970s run on Detective Comics as “Dark Detective I,” as precursor to his 2005 miniseries, Batman: Dark Detective, which he now calls “Dark Detective II.” I read these 1970s Englehart-Rogers Batman stories when I was a pre-teen, again in my late teens, and again in my early thirties, and now in my early 50s. I can say that, for the most part, these stories have aged well.
Englehart has also said that these stories not only influenced the 1989 Batman movie, but that they are also the reason that film went into development. I don't know if that is true or not, but I could believe it. These stories are special enough to influence other Batman storytellers, and in the trade paperback collection, Batman: Strange Apparitions, they prove that they won't fade away.

Usagi Yojimbo created by Stan Sakai
“Bunraku” Part One
Usagi Yojimbo, which means “rabbit bodyguard,” is an anthropomorphic rabbit ronin who is sometimes hired as a bodyguard. His adventures take place in Edo-era Japan (specifically the 17th century). Created by Stan Sakai, Miyamoto Usagi first appeared in the small press comic book, Albedo Anthropomorphics #2. He is the star of a long-running comic book series, Usagi Yojimbo, which has previously been published by Fantagraphics Books (1987-1993), by Mirage Publishing (1993-1995), and by Dark Horse Comics (1996-2018).
Now, Usagi Yojimbo has a new publisher, IDW Publishing. This 2019 iteration of the venerable creator-owned comic book title is also the first ongoing Usagi Yojimbo comic book series to be published in full-color. Once again the series is written, drawn, and lettered by creator Stan Sakai, and is colored by Tom Luth.
Usagi Yojimbo #1 opens with Sasuke, the fox who is a demon hunter, swordsman, and archer. He is in the middle of a battle against “the demons of Mount Funai.” Then, Lord Shoki the Demon Queller (the ghost who is also Sasuke's mentor) appears and sends Sasuke to the town of Kuroyama Mura. Meanwhile, Usagi (“Usagi Yojimbo”) is already in town and is enjoying a “Bunraku” (a classical form of Japanese puppet theater), unaware of how close he is to the evil that Sasuke seeks.
Every single time I have read a Usagi Yojimbo comic book or story, I have enjoyed it – sometimes immensely. Yet I cannot explain why I have read Usagi Yojimbo so little over the past three decades. So I thought that this series relaunch at IDW was the perfect time to reengage this beloved samurai rabbit. So how is the new comic book?
It's good, of course. I am quite intrigued by this opening chapter in what will be an introductory three-issue arc, apparently before a longer story arc begins. I don't think I'm telling people who have previously read Usagi Yojimbo something they don't already know. Stan Sakai is an accomplished comic book creator, artist, and illustrator, and his comic books have always shown that. Tom Luth, himself and accomplished comic book illustrator and colorist, also does good work here, of course.
What I can say is that readers unfamiliar with Usagi Yojimbo will find, in this new series, high-quality and delightful comic book storytelling. Usagi Yojimbo often has the timeless quality that classic fantasy literature has. If you are only interested in superhero comic books, dear reader, you may find that Stan Sakai and his samurai rabbit can still capture your imagination.

Rated “T”
Marvel Comics is in the middle of celebrating some kind of 80th anniversary or birthday. Marvel is 80 when you count the debuts of Marvel's “predecessors,” Timely Comics (1939) and Atlas Comics (1951 to 1971). The declaration, “80 Years,” is currently emblazoned on the Marvel logo.
As part of the celebration, Marvel has been publishing a series of one-shots that act as a brief continuation of odd, off-beat, and forgotten Marvel and Timely comics titles (such as the recent Ziggy Pig - Silly Seal Comics and Gunhawks one-shots). One of those one-shots, Star Wars No. 108, is a continuation of Marvel's original Star Wars comic book series, which was published from 1977 to 1986 for a total of 107 issues, three annuals, and the Return of the Jedi miniseries, which was a comic book adaptation of the 1983 film.
Star Wars #108 is written by Matthew Rosenberg, who divides the story into eight chapters. The team of Giuseppe Camuncoli and Cam Smith draws the first four pages of Chapter 1, with Andrea Broccardo drawing the rest. Chapter 2 is drawn by the team of Kerry Gammill and Ze Carlos. Chapter 3 is drawn by Broccardo. Chapter 4 is drawn by Jan Duursema (who drew numerous Star Wars comic books for Dark Horse Comics). Chapter 5 is drawn by Broccardo. Chapter 6 is drawn by Stefano Landini. Chapter 7 is drawn by Luke Ross (who has drawn several Star Wars comic books for Marvel). Chapter 8 is drawn by Leonard Kirk. The colorist for this comic book is Chris Sotomayor, and the letterer is Clayton Cowles.
Star Wars #108 is a sequel to “The Crimson Forever,” which was published in Star Wars #50 (cover dated: August 1981) and was written by late Archie Goodwin and drawn by the late Al Williamson and Walter Simonson. The story also features the character Valance the Hunter, a character that originates in Marvel's original Star Wars comic book and not in the Star Wars films. Valance was created by writer Goodwin and Simonson and first appeared in Star Wars #16 (cover dated: October 1978). Simonson, with colorist Antonio Fabela, provides the main cover art for Star Wars #108.
Other Star Wars comics-only characters appear in #108. First, they are the bounty hunters, Jaxxon (a rabbit-like humanoid) and the female, Amaiza Foxtrain, both of whom first appeared in Star Wars #8 (cover dated: February 1978) and who were created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Howard Chaykin. Another is the lead villain of “The Crimson Forever,” the vengeful Domina Tagge, who first appeared in Star Wars #35 (cover dated: May 1980) and who was created by writer Archie Goodwin and artist Carmine Infantino.
Star Wars #108, entitled “Forever Crimson” opens some time after the events depicted in Return of the Jedi. The story finds Domina Tagge again seeking to use the mysterious twin red jewels to avenge herself on both the Rebel Alliance (now known as the “Alliance of Free Planets”) and the remnants of the Galactic Empire. When separated, the jewels create a deadly plague called “the Crimson Forever.” Now, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO must stop Tagge. Jaxxon and Amaiza Foxtrain are allies-of-sorts to Luke and company, but they have their own plans. And Domina's actions have inadvertently served to revive Valance the Hunter, but whose side is he on?
First, let me say that I am disappointed and somewhat upset that Lando Calrissian does not appear in Star Wars #108, especially because he was directly involved in the original story, “The Crimson Forever.” That aside, this is a really nice way to celebrate and to remember – even honor – Marvel's original Star Wars comic book series. For many Star Wars fans (myself included, dear readers), Marvel's Star Wars was the only way we got a regular Star Wars fix during the three-year wait between the release of the original Star Wars films. [No newspaper local to me carried the very good Star Wars newspaper comic strip that ran from 1979 to 1984.]
Writer Matthew Rosenberg was also someone who was a big fan of those early Marvel Star Wars comic books. His love for them shows up in “Forever Crimson,” which is true in spirit, tone, and storytelling style to those old Star Wars comic books. We would be so lucky if Rosenberg produced sequels to other Star Wars stories from those bygone days.
The artists turn in excellent work, and Giuseppe Camuncoli and Cam Smith expertly mimic Walt Simonson's graphic style in their four-page retelling of the story of Valance the Hunter. Luke Ross delivers his usual stellar work, and Leonard Kirk's closing chapter, with its Art Adams and Mike Mignola-like flourishes, gives us award-worthy art.
Superstar colorist Chris Sotomayor displays his wicked skills coloring seven different artists or art teams in bright colors that recall old-school Marvel comic book coloring. And superstar letterer Clayton Cowles helps to give each chapter its own tone and atmosphere.
I was quite excited when I first heard about Star Wars #108. It surpasses my expectations, and it makes me anxious to go back and reread those old Star Wars comic books. That is high praise indeed.
This issue also includes an afterword in which several people who worked on the original Star Wars comic books recount, to editor Mark Paniccia, their experiences working on the title, some taking a paragraph or more to tell their story. These include Jo Duffy, Ron Frenz, David Michelinie, Tom Palmer, Louise Simonson, and Walter Simonson.

American Gods is the award-winning, 2001 novel from author Neil Gaiman. It is now being adapted into a comic book series, published by Dark Horse Comics. The novel won several fantasy-literary awards, and there is currently a hit television series adapted from the novel and televised on the cable network, Starz Media. American Gods blends Americana and also ancient and modern mythology to tell the story of a man caught in a war between the gods of the Old World and the new American gods.
The guiding hand behind the American Gods comic book is frequent Gaiman collaborator, P. Craig Russell. Russell wrote the script adaptation of Gaiman's novel and provided the layouts for the art. American Gods the comic book is drawn and colored by Scott Hampton and lettered by Rick Parker.
American Gods #3 finds the protagonist, Shadow Moon, and his mysterious employer, Mr. Wednesday, still in Indiana where Shadow attended the funeral of his wife, Laura. The duo prepares to leave for Chicago the following day, but that night, Shadow has strange, troubling dreams. Then, he gets a visit from Laura. Plus, meet the strange fortune tellers of Chicago.
I always feel or think that I have to let you know, dear reader, that I am a big fan of American Gods, although I did not read it upon its original release in 2001. I read the tenth anniversary edition which featured a longer text – the author's preferred edition. I also feel that I must admit that I loved that book, and that “love” is not a strong enough word in this case. American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition is one of my favorite books, and I consider the reading that edition of American Gods to be life-changing event for me in terms of my life as a writer. True, swear to an American god.
Dark Horse Comics, over their three decades-plus of publishing comic books adapted from other media, has produced countless high-quality “media-tie” comic book and adaptations, and American Gods is one of their best. Even into this third issue, P. Craig Russell and Scott Hampton's American Gods feels true to Neil Gaiman's storytelling and text.
Russell is patient and allows his script adaptation of Gaiman's expansive novel to breath, rather than forcing the pace to squeeze the narrative into a miniseries. Hampton's naturalistic art captures the supernatural aura surrounding American Gods' narrative, while fashioning a world that is both natural and supernatural. I wondered how they could pull off Laura's return, which is one of the more troubling sequences in the novel. They got it right; the comics vision of that event is also quite eerie.
So for a third time, I implore you to set aside your four dollars each month so that you can buy this lovely comic book, dear reader. American Gods may end up being on the short list of great comic book adaptations of a prose novel.
