Steve and Alan Moore's Long-Awaited "The Moon and the Serpent Bumper Book of Magic" Arrives Oct. 15th

Legendary Magician/Author Alan Moore Joins Steve Moore and Five Artists to Present The Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic.

You can buy the book at Amazon.

LOS ANGELES, CA - Internationally celebrated publishers Top Shelf Productions (USA) and Knockabout Ltd (UK) are proud to announce the publication date of the long-awaited THE MOON AND SERPENT BUMPER BOOK OF MAGIC. Born of the longstanding creative partnership between legendary writer Alan Moore (From Hell) and his creative and magical mentor Steve Moore (no relation), this celebration of magic and the occult has been meticulously under development for nearly two decades and is brought to life through a combination of prose, illustration, and sequential art from five incredible artists. This veritable grimoire of the magical, the mystical, and even the macabre went on sale in October 2024.

The secrets of the celebrated Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels (sorcery by appointment since circa 150 AD) promise to be revealed in THE MOON AND SERPENT BUMPER BOOK OF MAGIC. This clear and practical grimoire of the occult pairs the knowledge of the proprietors of the aforementioned Grand Egyptian Theatre with illuminating visual delights from artists Kevin O’Neill, John Coulthart, Steve Parkhouse, Rick Veitch, and Ben Wickey. Unprecedented in its scope and splendor, this tome is full to bursting with illustrated instructional essays, activity pages, biographies of the great sorcerers, and forbidden knowledge sure to tantalize even the most disillusioned of adults into believing in magic once again.

“One of the great honors of my publishing career has been to work with Alan Moore on so many monumental projects, like From Hell and Lost Girls,” says Chris Staros, Editor-in-Chief of Top Shelf Productions. The Moon and the Serpent Bumper Book of Magic represents an amazing capstone, created by Alan and Steve, and brilliantly brought to life by five unforgettable artists. It’s been a privilege to watch those magical minds spend years building this grimoire, and I’m proud to join Knockabout in finally sharing it with the world.”

THE MOON AND SERPENT BUMPER BOOK OF MAGIC (ISBN 978-1-60309-550-1) will be available in fine bookstores and comic shops in October 2024.  It is available for preorder from a number of outlets including Amazon.

#IReadsYou Review: ARE WE FEELING SAFER YET? - A (th)ink Anthology

ARE WE FEELING SAFER YET? A (TH)INK ANTHOLOGY #2
KEITH KNIGHT PRESS/Top Shelf Productions

CARTOONIST: Keith Knight
ISBN-13: 978-0-9788053-0-2; paperback; (January 2007)
128pp, B&W, $12.95 U.S., $16.95 CAN

Keith Knight is a cartoonist, musician, and television creator and executive producer (Hulu's “Woke”).  Knight also produces a weekly multi-panel strip, The K Chronicles, and he has previously contributed to MAD Magazine and ESPN The Magazine.

One of Knight's other comics is (th)ink, a socio-political (mostly) single-panel cartoon.  It began life in 2000 as a digital comic on the now defunct website, Africana.com.  Over the years, (th)ink has appeared on numerous websites and has been published in daily and alternative newspapers (including the San Francisco Chronicle, The Rocky Mountain Chronicle, and the Haight Ashbury Beat).  It currently appears in the Nib, Daily KOS, Antigravity, and The Funny Times, to name a few.

Published in 2007, Are We Feeling Safer Yet? was the second paperback collection of Knight's (th)ink cartoons.  What follows is the edited and revised text of a review of Are We Feeling Safer Yet? that I wrote for another website in late 2006:

THE LOWDOWN:  Although Knight probably calls (th)ink a comic strip, it's more like an ongoing editorial cartoon.  Knight's work is certainly related in terms of comic strips to work of cartoonist, Garry Trudeau, who is best known for his award-winning newspaper comic, Doonesbury.  As an African-American cartoonist, Knight's work is similar in tone to Aaron McGruder newspaper comic strip, The Boondocks.  However, while, Trudeau and McGruder deal with a cast of continuing characters and use them to comment on politics, society, and culture, Knight's cast is America itself.  Essentially, that is what an editorial cartoonist generally uses as his cast – our nation, even if, as a group, editorial cartoonists seemed fixated on politicians and in particular, the sitting President (in this case George W. Bush).

Knight is sharp and clever, and his humor and commentary are even sharper.  He is, though, not mean-spirited, and he only draws blood when he has to do so - such as when he uses a guy discovering that his color and white laundry have been mixed to comment on integration (p. 46).  Sometimes he cuts a subject because they handed him the blade, as in a cartoon featuring Snoop Dogg which comments on the rapper-actor's behavior on stage (p.78).

Knight is probably often compared to McGruder because both are Black cartoonists/commentators and both take the Bush Administration to the shed, but there, the similarity ends.  Knight belongs on the editorial page.  Because he uses Black characters and often deals with African-American or Hip-Hop culture doesn't make him different from white cartoonists and commentators who ply their trade on our nation's newspaper editorial sections.

Keith Knight is a funny guy, but he is astute like the good editorial cartoonist should be.  What Knight says with pen and ink makes sense, and he's ready for the big time. [End of text of original review.]

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Keith Knight and (th)ink will want Are We Feeling Safer Yet?

#IReadsYou Review: KORGI: The Cosmic Collector

KORGI (BOOK 2): THE COSMIC COLLECTOR
TOP SHELF PRODUCTIONS

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

CARTOONIST: Christian Slade
ISBN:  978-1-60309-010-0; paperback with French flaps (June 2008)
88pp, B&W interiors; full-color, double-spread cover; $10.00 U.S.

Korgi created by Ann and Christian Slade

Korgi (Book 2): The Cosmic Collector is a 2008 original graphic novel from writer-artist Christian Slade.  A paperback original with black and white interior art, The Cosmic Collector is the second in a series of five graphic novels.  The stories focus on two lead characters.  The first is Ivy, a young woman who his a “Mollie,” a woodland people who have fairy-like wings.  Then, there is Sprout, her “Korgi” (a kind of corgi) pup.  Their adventures take place in and around their home of “Korgi Hollow,” a village set in a faraway, pastoral land of woods, mountains, lakes, and cliffs.

The Korgi series is a pantomime or wordless comic, in which the story is told without word balloons, sound effects, caption boxes, or any other kind of text.  The Korgi series is ostensibly a children’s and young readers series, but it is also an “all-ages” comic that teenage and adult readers can also enjoy.  The fifth and final entry in the series, Korgi (Book 5): End of Seasons, is due in March 2021 (as of this writing).  Christian Slade is a comic book creator and former animator for the Walt Disney Company, where he worked on the 2003 animated feature film, Brother Bear.

Korgi (Book 2): The Cosmic Collector opens with a word or two from Wart, the scroll-keeper and historian of Korgi Hollow.  Next, one morning, Ivy and Sprout begin one of their usual jaunts through the forest near their home.  There, they discover fellow Mollie-Korgi duo, Art and Wanda, in a trap.  Soon, Ivy and Sprout discover that someone or something is clipping off the wings of Mollies.

Not long after their rescue mission, Ivy and Sprout encounter a peculiar creature, “Black 7,” and his maniacal companions, the “Bots.”  What is their connection to these grave assaults on the Mollies, and is Ivy at risk of losing her wings?

THE LOWDOWN:  I originally read Korgi (Book 1): Sprouting Wings thanks to a review “galley” copy I received from the book's publisher, Top Shelf Productions, back in 2007.  At the time, I never got around to reading the books that followed in the series, although I meant to do so.

I never forgot Korgi, and earlier this year, I turned to eBay and found someone selling the first two books in the series as a set.  Korgi (Book 2): The Cosmic Collector is like the first book in the series.  However, it mixes classic science fiction elements with the series' woodland fantasy milieu, and this results in another truly unique reading experience.  Also, the villains are quite interesting and mysterious, enough so that I remain curious about them even after reading The Curious Collector.

Christian Slade’s art still recalls the pen and ink book illustration of the first half of the 20th century.  The art is drawn entirely in pencil art, with Slade using cross-hatching and line work to add exacting detail to the drawings of characters and settings.  This gives Slade's art a sense of texture, a tactile sense for the eyes that blends well with the art's gentle, lamp-lit quality, which is also found in some of Walt Disney's animated films.  I think this Disney-esque style of the art and storytelling is perfect for a children’s illustrated book or comic book.  In fact, Korgi (Book 2): The Cosmic Collector is as much a picture book as it is an original graphic novel.

The series' stars, Ivy and Sprout, shine in Korgi (Book 2): The Cosmic Collector.  Ivy even shows a more plucky and determined side than she showed in the first book.  Slade's storytelling makes me think of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved children's fantasy novel, The Hobbit (1937), which I have read more times than I can remember.  However, The Curious Collector adds something new to the fantasy mix, which makes me curious about where this series is going.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Those looking for a young readers' comic book will find an excellent choice in Korgi (Book 2): The Cosmic Collector.
