Batman created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger
For a long time, film critics and movie buffs considered sequels to acclaimed and/or popular films to be inferior, and they mostly were. Sequels were often cheaper, made with production budgets that were lower (sometimes much lower) than the original film's budget. Sometimes, not only were key members of the original cast missing, but also missing were the original screenwriter(s) and director.
Of course, there were exceptions. Many people think that The Godfather II was a better film than The Godfather, which itself is one of the greatest films of all time. George Lucas may have been unhappy with the reception to The Empire Strikes Back, but almost everyone thinks this sequel was vastly superior to the more famous and financially successful Star Wars (1977). And Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008) practically eclipsed his first Batman film, Batman Begins (2005), which itself was and still is one of the best movies based on a superhero comic book ever made.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (also known simply as The Dark Knight Returns or DKR) was a four-issue comic book miniseries starring Batman. Published by DC Comics in 1986, this prestige-format comic book was written by Frank Miller; drawn by Miller (pencils) and Klaus Janson (inks); colored by Lynn Varley; and lettered by John Costanza, with the book covers drawn by Miller and Varley. Dark Knight III: The Master Race (also known as DKIII), the second sequel to DKR, is an inferior sequel to a landmark original.
Yes, a planned nine-issue series, DKIII is written by DKR's Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello; drawn by Andy Kubert (pencils) and DKR's Klaus Janson (inks); colored by Brad Anderson; and lettered by Clem Robins. Yes, you have the original author and some of the biggest names in mainstream comic books joining him, but DKIII is not only inferior, but is also nothing more than corporate product meant to cash in on a still-famous original. But first things first...
Dark Knight III: The Master Race #6 finds Batman and Superman leading a revolt against the alien menace from the Bottled City of Kandor (now grown full-size) that has put Gotham City under siege and threatens the same to the rest of the world. Meanwhile, Carrie, the Robin from DKR who is now the new Batgirl(?), battles the new “Supergirl,” who is Lara, the daughter of Superman and Wonder Woman. How does it end? With a death... maybe.
First, I don't buy that Frank Miller actually has much input in the main narrative. Yeah, you can rag on The Dark Knight Strikes Again (DK2), the original sequel, but it was both original and an eclectic take on familiar comics tropes. DKIII is just a rehash of ideas from DKR – old and aging superheroes, Bat vs. Kryptonian, and some vague law and order themes. In some ways, this doesn't even rise to the level of Azzarello's previous and acclaimed work.
Secondly, The Dark Knight Returns was a “What if” or “Elseworlds” Batman story that DC Comics bosses and comic book fans turned from a special event into an entrenched mindset. They can't let it go, and everything that they have done with it since the debut of DKR only serves to prove how special and of-its-times the original was. Even Frank Miller has not been able to recapture the glory of the original, and honestly, the only thing that Brian Azzarello and Andy Kubert can do is lend their names to the corporate, Batman sub-brand that is “The Dark Knight.”
Dark Knight III: The Master Race is not a bad comic. I bought into the hype, although part of me knew where this was going even while buying the product. There are indeed some stand-out Batman comics being done right now by Scott Snyder and John Romita, Jr. on All-Star Batman and by Tom King and David Finch on Batman.
Dark Knight Universe Presents: World's Finest #1 (Insert comic book)
STORY: Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello
PENCILS: Frank Miller
INKS: Klaus Janson
COLORS: Alex Sinclair
LETTERS: Clem Robins
COVER: Frank Miller with Alex Sinclair
Frank Miller seems to have a bigger hand in these Dark Knight Universe Presents comic books which are inserted in the middle of each issue of DKIII. To date, there has not been much to say about them, and that has not changed.

Review: BLANC ET NOIR: Takeshi Obata Illustrations
BLANC ET NOIR: TAKESHI OBATA ILLUSTRATIONS
VIZ MEDIA– @VIZMedia
ARTIST: Takeshi Obata
EDITOR (JAPAN): Masahiko Ibaraki
TRANSLATION: Tersuichiro Miyaki
DESIGNER: Yukiko Whitley
EDITOR: Hope Donovan
ISBN: 978-1-4215-8627-4; hardcover-slipcase, (May 2016)
132pp, Color, $99.99 U.S., $119.99 CAN, £65.99 UK
Takeshi Obata is a Japanese manga artist known for his work as the illustrator in collaboration with a writer. He first gained attention and acclaim for drawing the manga, Hikaru no Go (1998–2003), which was written by Yumi Hotta. Obata also drew the manga adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's science fiction novel, All You Need Is Kill, with Ryōsuke Takeuchi writing and providing storyboards.
Obata's best known collaborations are with writer, Tsugumi Ohba. This duo produced two manga, Death Note (2003–2006) and Bakuman (2008–2012). Death Note is hugely controversial and notorious. Originally published in Japan's Weekly Shonen Jump, Death Note follows Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook belonging to Ryuk, a Shinigami (a death god). The notebook grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face Yagami knows.
VIZ Media, which has published English-language editions of several manga drawn by Obata, is releasing a limited edition art book focusing on his work. Entitled Blanc Et Noir: Takeshi Obata Illustrations, it is part of the “Art of Shonen Jump” line and is limited to a print run of only 10,000 copies. Blanc Et Noir is a hardcover book with dimensions of 10.25” width and 14.75 in length (like a folio edition).
This over-sized art book is encased in a silver-stamped slipcase and is stuffed with 132 pages of full-color art, all printed on deluxe paper stock. The book contains several massive foldout posters and 12 pages of artist commentary, including a “how to draw” section. Blanc Et Noir also includes three large, double-sided laminated posters. One of the posters with Death Note as its subject acts as the slipcase's “cover” image, because it can be viewed through the cameo oval of the slipcase.
Blanc Et Noir focuses on Obata's work from 2001 to 2006. That includes cover art for magazines and comics, chapter title illustrations, poster art, centerfold galleries, and other color illustrations. Blanc Et Noir features definitive illustrations from the manga, Death Note and Hikaru No Go. Surprises include video game design (for Yoshitsune-ki), original works created for this book (including Death Note and Hikaru No Go pieces), and rare novel illustrations (for Kowloon).
Writer Nobuaki Enoki, Takeshi Obata's collaborator on the manga, School Judgment, refers to Obata as the “God of Drawing” and “Walking Artistic Skill.” Blanc Et Noir: Takeshi Obata Illustrations makes an overwhelmingly strong argument that Enoki is right.
Obata's black and white manga art, which I assume is done with the aid of assistants, is a symphony of precision graphical storytelling. Blanc Et Noir shows the purity of Obata's art, showcasing his skill as a color artist, character designer, costume designer, and master illustrator. Obata's elegant crisp style is set afire with a kaleidoscope of colors that he uses like fuel.
I cannot imagine that any fan of Obata will want to be without this book. The price, $99.99, is prohibitive (Amazon.com offers it for a little under $68), and if you can afford it, this is the art book book/collector's set to get. The book, with its use of several different kinds of high-end paper stock, laminated posters, and, of course, lovely contents, is worthy of fans who love manga and the art of their favorite mangaka.
Yeah, my VIZ Media rep provided me with a copy for review. If he had not, I was not above turning a few tricks for the extra cash I needed to buy this. Seriously, Blanc Et Noir: Takeshi Obata Illustrations is the real deal.

Review: THE HELLBLAZER #2
THE HELLBLAZER #2
DC COMICS – @DCComics
WRITER: Simon Oliver
ARTIST: Moritat
COLORS: Andre Szymanowicz
LETTERS: Sal Cipriano
COVER: Moritat
VARIANT COVER: John Cassaday with Paul Mounts
32pp, Color, $2.99 U.S. (November 2016)
Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”
John Constantine created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben and Jamie Delano & John Ridgway
“The Poison Truth” Part 2
DC Comic's new publishing event/initiative (entitled “Rebirth”) offers the fourth John Constantine comic book series, The Hellblazer. It is written by Simon Oliver; drawn by Moritat; colored by Andre Szymanowicz; and lettered by Sal Cipriano.
The Hellblazer #2 (“The Poison Truth” Part 2) opens with two old friends discussing the good, bad, and awful in the box of deplorable that is John Constantine. Speaking of the devil, Constantine is being kicked out of his “temporary” shelter, but he has other things on his mind. He is back in London, and his welcome-me-home gift to the city was bringing it to the edge of destruction. So why hasn't anyone from the London Underworld contacted him any in manner? He hopes to get answers from an old (old) friend, Clarice Sackville, but she is speaking the language of English romantic poets.
First, I have to admit that I was and still am a big fan of Constantine: The Hellblazer simply because the 13-issue series brought John back to form, but had him hell-raising and -blazing in the good old U.S. of A. So, it is not as if The Hellblazer is the return to some lost form, but returning John to his original stomping grounds makes The Hellblazer quite formidable.
I did read the one-shot The Hellblazer: Rebirth, and I pretended to like it a lot more than I really did. I did not read The Hellblazer #1, but even reading only issue #2, it is clear to me that this could be a damn good read. I say that because The Hellblazer #2 is a damn fine read. Writer John Oliver's script recalls the best years of John, and artist Moritat's eclectic line work and Andre Szymanowicz's watercolor-like hues infuse the story with supernatural atmospherics.
I think The Hellblazer will cast some old black magic on comic book readers.

“Swords and Omens”
Masters of the Universe (MOTU) is a media franchise that began as an action figures line created by toy giant, Mattel. MOTU is also often known as “He-Man” after the franchise's lead character and hero, He-Man/Prince Adam. MOTU is set on the planet Eternia, a world that mixes medieval sword and sorcery with science fiction technology. The premise of the story revolves around the conflict between He-Man and the evil Skeletor.
ThunderCats began as an animated television series created by Tobin “Ted” Wolf. The show was an American production, but the animation for the show was done in Japan. The series focuses on a group of cat-like humanoid aliens, the “Thunder Cats,” who, led by their young king, Lion-o, protects the world known as “Third Earth,” from the evil and powerful Mumm-ra.
These two decades-old media franchises come together in the new DC Comics miniseries, He-Man ThunderCats. This comic book is written by Rob David and Lloyd Goldfine; drawn by Freddie E. Williams II; colored by Jeremy Colwell; and lettered by Deron Bennett.
As He-Man ThunderCats #1 (“Swords and Omens”) opens, Mumm-ra's punk ass has just lost to Lion-o... again. Even a being who holds sway over death, however, must serve someone, and Mumm-ra's “benefactors,” the Ancient Spirits of Evil, want results. What they want is on the magical planet of Eternia. The method by which they send Mumm-ra to obtain it will force two groups of heroes together in order to save two worlds.
He-Man ThunderCats #1 does not necessarily start with a bang. I was also put off by how much comedy plays on the Eternia end of the story because I had forgotten how much humor was a part of the “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” animated series. The first two-thirds of this comic book has a jarring tone, but writer Rob David and Lloyd Goldfine bring everything crashing together by the end. Suddenly, it is serious; lives are on the line; and everything is at stake.
I was a fan of artist Freddie E. Williams II's work on the recent crossover comic book miniseries, Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In the first issue of He-Man ThunderCats, I am impressed by his ability to juggle big action scenes with the large number of characters he must depict. I don't know if Williams can match his Batman/TMNT work, but I am curious to see where this goes.
