According to AOL's Black Voices Blog, filmmaker and playwright Tyler Perry has launched a new production company, 34th Street Films, which will be housed at Lionsgate. Lionsgate has distributed all of Tyler Perry's films to date, including the upcoming, I Can Do Bad All by Myself.
The first 34th Street Films production will be an adaptation of the Obie Award-winning play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. Written by by Ntozake Shange, the play was first staged in 1975 (in California), before moving to Broadway in 1976. Perry will write the screenplay, as well as produce and direct the film.
The film is scheduled to begin production this year with a tentative release date in 2010.
